Seeing as the thread was started after midday, I'll bite. The last time I looked, if you have a televison, you need to have a licence. It may be boring but it's the law, unfortunately.

But we have established that the op does not own a television.
He also has no cannabis,which is where I lost interest in the thread.

From what I understand of the law, if you have equipment capable of receiving TV broadcasts (regardless of what you use that equipment for), you need a TV Licence. I could be wrong about that though!

I don't mind the TV Licence. It's what, just over £100 a year? For that I get all the BBC tv channels, I also get to listen to Five Live and I visit the BBC News and Sport website several times a day. Good value.

I pay my TV license, but just because you have the internet and a TV doesn't mean you have to pay it. It's only if you use the TV/internet for watching live broadcasts that you have to pay it.

I'm a student, so I asked them this very question when I lived in halls last year because I couldn't afford the license but I had a TV. I just used the TV to play on my PS3, that's all.

If you have a TV you are supposed to pay a TV licence. That's why it's called a TV licence not a "BBC Licence". Nobody has to pay for anything if they don't want, it's a moral obligation. That's why they spend millions of pounds of licence payers money chasing people who haven't paid it, they don't have much legal recourse.

Is the Tv licensing authority a private company?

i dont watch live tv no.
also if we're going to be picky i wonder how many people on here use or have used any of the free streams to citys games? are they all going to hand themselves in for illegal streaming?

If the machine you own has the potential to be used to view TV you need a TV licence. Computers, TV's etc. It doesn't matter if you don't have an internet connection or an ariel you still need one. It's just another tax and one you have to pay unfortunately.
