Can someone please tell me where i can find the actual law which states that you do need a TV license to watch TV?

Is the Tv licensing authority a private company?

Please correct me if I'm wrong!
they are based in bristol but there is some ploy where it looks as if its not part of the bbc.something to do with business name i think.dont think its a law either even tho they say so on the threatening letters they send out.im sure its an act or bill

-- Sun Apr 01, 2012 4:20 pm --

If the machine you own has the potential to be used to view TV you need a TV licence. Computers, TV's etc. It doesn't matter if you don't have an internet connection or an ariel you still need one. It's just another tax and one you have to pay unfortunately.
wrong

incorrect. just as you can own a car and not have a driving licence you dont need a tv licence just because you own a tv.

You DO NOT need a tv licence just because you own a tv. i own a tv and only ever watch stuff on iplayer, itv player, 4od etc and use my playstation on it. therefore as long as i'm not watching anything live or recording live programs i dont need a licence. the constant letters and threats are just to scare people into buying licences even if they don't need one. they can't come in and search your property unless they have a warrant.
seems some people on here are happy just to cough up £145 even if they don't actually need to.

If you are telling me you don't watch TV I am going to say you are a lying blaggard, and the TV Licence Agency or whatever they are called probably feel the same.
if i was to take a tv quiz id fail

I'm going to have to put this to the test.

Q. What is the name of the long running soap opera set in the fictional Salford suburb of Weatherfield, whose longest serving character is Ken Barlow?

In The Night Garden.

Sent by Igglepiggle on my magic wand.

I went an entire year without watching a single TV programme. It's remarkably easy when you can just watch things on Youtube instead. The quality of TV these days is garbage anyway.

I don't know why were still arguing over this anyway. I asked THEM if you need a license for owning a TV and they said quite plainly NO. Only if you use your TV to watch live broadcasts. It's not rocket science.

If we got half the programmes America got it might be worth paying for but we dont! Just robbing twats.

So do you watch TV and not pay? or do you just not watch TV?

note: There's only one answer and you're a lying **** if you say you don't watch TV.

Even if the op owns a TV he does not need a TV license.

He may use it to watch DVDs, play games, watch BBC iPlayer post broadcast shows without the need for a license.

You need a license only to watch live TV as broadcast.

Anyone who thinks differently is plain wrong.

He has internet access, the internet can be used to watch live broadcasts, therefore he needs a TV licence.

Uninformed, ignorant bollocks.

Go away and find out what you are talking about before posting crap again.

no i dont
Seeing as the thread was started after midday, I'll bite. The last time I looked, if you have a televison, you need to have a licence. It may be boring but it's the law, unfortunately.

Another ignorant fool.

Untrue my friend.

From what I understand of the law, if you have equipment capable of receiving TV broadcasts (regardless of what you use that equipment for), you need a TV Licence. I could be wrong about that though!

You are
totally wrong

I pay my TV license, but just because you have the internet and a TV doesn't mean you have to pay it. It's only if you use the TV/internet for watching live broadcasts that you have to pay it.

I'm a student, so I asked them this very question when I lived in halls last year because I couldn't afford the license but I had a TV. I just used the TV to play on my PS3, that's all.

If you have a TV you are supposed to pay a TV licence. That's why it's called a TV licence not a "BBC Licence". Nobody has to pay for anything if they don't want, it's a moral obligation. That's why they spend millions of pounds of licence payers money chasing people who haven't paid it, they don't have much legal recourse.

Jesus wept more shite posted as fact!

From the licensing authority site

If you own or possess a television set without installing or using it as a TV receiver (e.g. you only use it to watch videos or DVDs, or as a monitor for a games console) then you don’t need a TV Licence.

and

If you are using the BBC iPlayer to watch programmes on-demand i.e. after they have been shown, you do not need a TV Licence.

I DO pay my TV license, yet I DON'T watch TV. I pay it because my flatmate watches TV.

Everybody just assumes because they can't go without watching some rubbish reality TV dross that therefore nobody can. I manage totally fine not watching TV and I have a TV in my room and everything, even though it isn't connected to an arial cos there's no point in me having one.

To call anybody a 'lying ****' because you can't imagine life without your shite TV is quite frankly insulting, and I think if I were exileindevon I'd be pretty pissed off.
