So do you watch TV and not pay? or do you just not watch TV?

note: There's only one answer and you're a lying **** if you say you don't watch TV.

I DO pay my TV license, yet I DON'T watch TV. I pay it because my flatmate watches TV.

Everybody just assumes because they can't go without watching some rubbish reality TV dross that therefore nobody can. I manage totally fine not watching TV and I have a TV in my room and everything, even though it isn't connected to an arial cos there's no point in me having one.

To call anybody a 'lying ****' because you can't imagine life without your shite TV is quite frankly insulting, and I think if I were exileindevon I'd be pretty pissed off.
well said nowever im now more intersted in you paying for your flatmate.does she have large breasts

Unfortunately not, and she's taken, so bad news all round I'm afraid. As a result I made her pay for half of it ;)

If you don't need a license, then why do stores ask for your address at the checkout, and if you haven't got a license at that address, they cannot sell you the tv?

If the machine you own has the potential to be used to view TV you need a TV licence.
Where the f* is European law on this? RandomJ's statement holds true in this overpaid, rule-abiding, bureaucracy-laden, benefits-weighted sh!thole of a country (Norway), but why should different countries have different regulations and prices?

I own a TV, but since the introduction of digital TV (probably about 2 years ago), the TV has sat in a cardboard box, somewhere in the barn. I used to watch DVDs on it, but 'they' said I needed a licence for that, in the remote chance that I might switch on the TV and watch some of the cr*p they produce. If I buy a new TV (God forbid, there's so much sh!te on), the shop have to tell the licensing authorities, and I'm then billed for a licence - all £350 or so.

So, b*ll*cks to bureaucracy, even if it does keep some people in paid employment. And b*ll*cks to this Mac, which is so old that I couldn't get a TV-stream if I sold everything I own. B*ll*cks to Norway and double-b*ll*cks to Europe for not sorting out the things that really matter.

(Back to the red wine...) Question, though - How much do the BBC have to pay for cultivating marijuana?

Even if the op owns a TV he does not need a TV license.

He may use it to watch DVDs, play games, watch BBC iPlayer post broadcast shows without the need for a license.

You need a license only to watch live TV as broadcast.

Anyone who thinks differently is plain wrong.

He has internet access, the internet can be used to watch live broadcasts, therefore he needs a TV licence.

Uninformed, ignorant bollocks.

Go away and find out what you are talking about before posting crap again.

I see the anger management course isnt going too well.

But maybe you should tell these paople that you know the legislation better than them as they think
"You need to be covered by a valid TV Licence if you watch or record TV as it's being broadcast. This includes the use of devices such as a computer, laptop, mobile phone or DVD/video recorder."
<a class="postlink" href="http://www.tvlicensing.co.uk/check-if-you-need-one/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.tvlicensing.co.uk/check-if-you-need-one/</a>

But maybe I have just imagined seeing those people getting prosecuted in court each month for about the last 5 or 6 years for not having a licence

What a load of shit (Coming from someone who bought a TV about 4 weeks ago)

Anyone had a run-in with the HMRC?

They are a bunch of ruthless b*stards and once they get you in their sights it is not pleasant - even if you don't owe them anything.

The TV licence is now officially a tax, but enforcement is almost comically inefficient and only a complete idiot can ever be punished for not paying it.

If payment of income tax and VAT were enforced by the BBC and their agents Capita hardly anyone would pay up as the chances of getting caught would be so small and the punishment so lenient.

Of course, tax evasion is a serious offence and nobody should do it.

That quote doesn't support your argument. It supports denislawsbackheel. You're saying if you have the internet you need a TV license and that isn't true in any way shape or form. Even what you've quoted yourself there doesn't say that.

The people prosecuted are prosecuted only because they were found to be watching live TV over the internet which is completely different to simply owning an internet connection but not owning a license. The latter of which is perfectly legal.

I can only assume you are an illiterate twat or stupid.

my posts have nothing to do with watching live.
If you don't watch it live you don't need a license.

Never had a licence for 11 years (in 2 different houses). Received the monthly letters and ignored them.
Twice they knocked on the door. Twice they asked to come in and have a look. Twice I asked them was I under any obligation to let them in. Twice they said no I wasn't. Twice I bid them good day and closed the door.

Luckily for you, the rest of us paid your share, along with anyone else who dodges the licence.
This.

What a morrisey loving selfish git.

You're going over the top with the insults.

I don't often agree with Law myself, but he's a decent fella. No need for the abuse.

I'm not talking about Aldi or Lidl mate, proper electrical stores (and that's coming from someone who doesn't buy on the cheap) No, seriously this has happened a few times to me.

Any store selling a TV has to inform the licensing authority of the buyers address or they get a £1,000 fine.

All well and good, but what if I'm to buy a second hand TV, will the authorities have my address?

From the licensing authority site

If you own or possess a television set without installing or using it as a TV receiver (e.g. you only use it to watch videos or DVDs, or as a monitor for a games console) then you don’t need a TV Licence.

and

If you are using the BBC iPlayer to watch programmes on-demand i.e. after they have been shown, you do not need a TV Licence.

Does all 100% of the licence fee go to the BBC?

For something I very rarely use 12 quid a month is steep.

40p a day is steep?<br /><br />-- Sun Apr 01, 2012 9:07 pm --<br /><br />
