1 in 10 prosecutions in this country comes from non-payment of the TV licence, normally poor people who can't afford to pay £150+ a year to watch TV that seems to be becoming less focused on news and public affaairs. Time to sell it off and make it dependent on advertising revenue?

It should be stripped down to nothing and the people who work there should thank themselves for the mistrust and suspicion a lot of the public have of them. The BBC used to reflect society but culturally IMO it attacks us and wants us to pay for the privilege.

I understand some people still like it and it's their opinion, a referendum on the licence fee and a quick short death thereafter should ensue.

I’d volley the pedophile employing, scouse and Rag sympathising, radical leftist agenda driven, middle class twunts into Salford Quays.

On a serious note, yes, privatise them and get them to compete with the rest, without forcing people to pay for the privilege.

No - you'd lose about 95% of current out put and pay several times as much as you do now for the left over rump.

They are in the process of decriminalising non payment anyway aren't they?

And if you made it subscription based don't think thats a utopia that will suit non-payers - SKY etc can and do pursue users of their platform who don't subscribe as its classed as theft - the same people will commit the same offence and still get a criminal record for theft. So someone who can't afford the £150ish now for all the TV channels, local TV, Radio both national and local , on line content and iPlayer won't suddenly be able to afford the same or more in subs for a fraction of that out put.

I've never understood the obsession over the politics of the BBC because does anyone actually watch things like BBC News to even care? Isn't it something like only 5% of the country watches the news on a daily basis so who cares?

I'd like all of the broadcasters to abolish the news/politics/debate type shows and just concentrate on good quality TV (not more recorded Z-list celebrity quiz shows!!!).

We still haven't got anything worth watching on a Saturday night let alone the rest of the week yet most of the time we pay for the privilege... Thank god for Netflix.

Yes, It is wrong on just about every level. They pay top dollar for so called celebs and yet do not have to compete with anybody for their money. Now they want to hammer the old folk like Oakie and make them pay for one of the few pleasures they have in life.
Make them earn their money like every other buismess.

I think there is something to be said for retaining a publicly funded news channel, especially when you see the state of US news.

I have worked for the BBC in the distant past so I declare an interest.

What you see with the BBC ignores what you don't see. There is a reason the UK is the place so many great movies are made, their is a reason so many great documentaries are made and their is a reason why its still one of the great institutions that we the people own.

You can think what you like about its output, that is a personal choice. I don't watch EastEnders, but millions do, I like to watch Bargain Hunt but millions don't, I still prefer the BBC news to any other news channel although I don't mind SKY news.

What historically the BBC has always done well is produce the best technicians in the world, that's why people will come to the UK to make movies, drama's and documentaries because the technicians are the best there is anywhere in the world. It also has the best radio output of anywhere in the world and the crass decision to close down many of the BBC foreign language stations has diminished UK soft power.

Their is motive behind the attacks on the BBC, its because capitalists hate to see a good thing that they cant make money from. They want it in their hands so they can profit from it. The BBC makes profit, it sells programs world wide, if any of you have had a BBC pass card, it gets you entry into virtually anywhere because across the world the BBC is seen as a trustworthy organisation that is a bastion of Britishness.

Of course you could sell it off to a capitalist, who will turn it into another version of SKY TV where watching Andy Pandy costs a tenner, the technicians are paid minimum wage and are useless and the race to the bottom for another great British institution will carry on.

Those who wish to see it gone will maybe regret it one day, because once its gone, it aint coming back.

Absolutely. People should not be forced to pay for entertainment that is of no interest them. Make the advertise like the other channels if they wish to continue.
