BBC licence fee

The Rest is Entertainment podcast with Richard Osman is really interesting, because he basically talks about the finances of TV a lot. One thing he mentions is that the BBC funding has been cut dramatically and that affects the sort of TV it has to make. In particular, things that are topical have little repeat or resale value. So in the world of panel shows, something like Mock the Week gets cut because it's harder to sell, whereas something like Would I Lie To You can be watched and rewatched at any time. He mentioned that sketch shows have died a death on TV because they're very expensive because of the number of different scenes required. Meanwhile formulaic stuff like property shows and quiz shows are very cheap to churn out quickly.

Also the BBC World Service has been merged with BBC News, meaning they're expected to provide the same service with a vastly reduced budget (although apparently they're going back on this). The BBC World Service along with the British Council are two areas or soft power that the government have cut massively, and made to run like businesses rather than government institutions, which I guess fits in with this insular, inward-looking government.

Like so many things with this government (councils, universities), you're paying more but getting less, because the money the central government used to put in has disappeared, and service providers are having to put their prices up to make up the shortfall while also cutting costs.
Brilliant podcast that!

Seeing people who contribute to GBNews and TalkTV lamenting that the BBC won't be covering the Boat Race, have lost the National, Cheltenham and so on. The same people who have been actively promoting the non -payment of the licence fee - they were warned of the consequences and now they don't like them - muppets

Fuck off Sky. Bbc all the way. At least they report the news in Iran and what israel and America are doing. Sky, Fox just want to support Trump. Tell us all that trump is a genius and the Iran war is a just one.

The dickheads that want the bbc gone don't realise how they are shooting themselves in the bollocks. The rich media owners love you guys. They want you to believe their truth.

When I got my new car I suddenly realised how many radio channels the bbc have.
Radio 1 has 5
Radio 3 has 2 as has Radio 4
Radio 5 has 3 and if memory serves me well, there is a Radio 6.
Plus every local area have their own station.
No privately funded company could have that many. Its bloated and. obscene.
My 91 yr old mother has to pay a licence fee to keep all those, producers, sound engineers and what ever in a job.
What a joke.

Is that a bad thing that local areas have local stations focusing on local issues?

Not sure what the fact that a channel has different frequencies matters too? They are all aimed at differing demographics.

What would you like to see?

What do you mean 'different frequencies '?
I'm on about Radio 1, Radio 1 Dance, Radio 1 X and 2 others in the Radio 1 stable, (I'm sure one is anthems)

Radio 5 got its licence by saying is was a dedicated sports channel, it's not and why does it need 2 other Radio 5 channels?
Someone has to pay for it all, one of them is my 91 year old mother who used to get it free.
And yes it's great that everyone can tune into local radio except someone has to pay for it.

What would I like to see ? It being reigned in. It is not a bottomless pit and it cannot afford all those radio stations. They need to stop paying over inflated wages and they need to work on a proper budget.

Its not a joke its a national broadcaster doing what is required of it - if you live in Manchester and pay your fee do you not deserve BBC1,2,3,4,5, iPlayer, Sounds, all the podcasts and all the local radio stations that bring local news and sport for what will be £180 next year. I pay over £300 a year for SKY - don't do any of the sports nor film packages and I am waiting for SKY DAB Radio to launch. BTW SKY employs producers, sound engineers, presenters etc etc it just pays them more why there is a bleed of them to the better paying source. We get what we pay for. Does you mum listen to local BBC news to get local info or GBNews to learn about boats and nothing else?

You have a choice whether to buy sky or not. No one has a choice with the bbc.
Why does Radio 1 needs 5 seperate channels ? (And i dont mean Radio 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6) If they can afford it, fine. But they can't.
They could, like a private business would have to, make cut backs, but they don't. They increase the licence fee and carry on expanding. That's not a way to run a good business.

As for your weird comment about my mum, best I just ignore that.

every response is mental and avoid reality except for your mum as being born in 1935 she will have relied on the BBC for war new and beyond.

You’ve been mugged paying £25 a month for Sky without Sports channels, I used to subscribe to Sky purely for the Sport, their “entertainment” package is absolute shite, not worth the money plus the organisation like the BBC is infiltrated by red shirt journo’s all trying to indoctrinate their audience.

The BBC has the upper hand though, they can throw in plenty of sex scandals and paedophiles into the mix.

The BBC has clearly been influenced
by recent British governments and has had weak leadership.
The decline in standards is a reflection of the mess the country is currently in.

It’s not had weak leadership, it’s had leadership made up of ex members of the Tory party selected by the then government.
It then gets told it must have large viewing audiences to justify its licence fee and everyone wonders why they always have the red shirts on, if they’ve got any football to show.
As for the denuding of the World Service, it’s yet another example of successive British governments who know the cost of everything but the value of nothing.

I take your point on the Radio 1 channels. It does seem a little extreme.

Not sure why you brought your Mum in to it, if she uses the service - she pays. Simple really. I know pensioners used to get it free, but times change - they’ve had to do what they’ve done to keep up with changes in how we enjoy our media. She doesn’t have to pay if she doesn’t use the services.

I think it’s still a great thing to have - yes, there are some negatives, but the local content (which I think we need more of - local papers are dead!), the kids stuff, the Website, Good Food, the educational stuff, the sports coverage, sounds/iplayer.

They are all extremely good things for most areas of society. Yes, they have stuff - which I pay for - which doesn’t cater to me and my tastes, but I still am happy to pay for it for the wider service.

Just out of interest mate, and it doesn't apply to me personally , (although I do buy my aunties tv license in the UK) if Misty's mum watches live tv she needs a license....no ?

From Wikipedia..
In the United Kingdom and the rest of the British Islands, any household watching or recording television transmissions at the same time they are being broadcast is required by law to hold a television licence. This applies regardless of transmission method, including terrestrial, satellite, cable, and internet streaming. It is also required for the viewing of on demand content on BBC iPlayer.

Yep - that’s correct.

You state pensioners used to get it free, now they have to pay. You also state that the number of Radio 1channels is a bit extreme.
That is my point. They are running a business unchecked by normal financial rules, if you cannot afford it, don't expand.
Unlike some posters on here I fully accept paying for a licence and a lot of their content is good. What I dont accept is that they dont operate like a sensible business, There are no checks and balances and now having exhausted every revenue stream, including pensioners, they go moaning to the government as they're skint.

Reduce the wage bill of so called stars is one way of ensuring your survival as a business.

Cancelled my license a few weeks ago, don’t watch BBC woke infested dramas anymore so can do without it, dodgy box is fine for me. Got a knock on the door this week, lad trying to crane his neck to see if he could see my TV screen which he can’t. Answered the door, he said “your TV licence has expired” I said I was well aware and I don’t watch live TV or any BBC I Player programme’s. He said “but you need it to watch any live TV”. I said he wasn’t listening and I’d told him I don’t watch live TV, he just fucked off, there’s nothing they can do.
