BBC sport best overseas player

You can go back further than that if you like. I remember Mühren and Thijssen coming over to join Ipswich Town at the end of the seventies. That created quite a stir at the time. Thijssen was even voted Player of the Year. Now I'm not defending Cantona (or attacking him for that matter, I can't be bothered), but it does rather look as though what had been a trickle up to then became more of a flood. It's obviously simplistic to say it was “because of Cantona”. It was more to do with the times, the money coming into the English game and, I presume, more relaxed regulations about EU sportsmen plying their trade in the UK.

It was down to Alan Ball in 95/96 challenging the FA or PL as he wanted to sign more overseas players, and the same seaon UEFA lifted the 3 foriegner rule in their comps.

Big teams were never going to sign a team of non-English players, or non-asimilated, until 1996 as you could only play 3 in the UEFA comps.

Apparently all the foreign players only came to England because of Eric Cantona. I am so pleased I watched the program last night whilst making tea because I never knew that fact....... would love to see where any player who joined City from abroad says, 'I joined City because of Eric Cantona'

Ridiculous. C*ntona's spell in England just happened to coincide with the biggest influx of money to the English game ever. Foreign players became much more inclined to join English clubs after that because of the money, nothing to do with that preening prick.

You're mistaken about that. He was most definitely a star in France. He had to get out because he'd fallen out with so many trainers. Referees too. That's a question of temperament. But he was broadly recognised as one of the naturally talented players of his generation. And from a very early age.
Didn’t know that about cantona, fair enough, but it was still money in the game from sky which resulted in the influx of foreign. Not cantona, although I sure the rags would agree

The rags are a confused lot aren't they? When Cantona was there they voted him the best player of all time that had been at their club, not the great George Best or Duncan Edwards or the family man, he wasn't even the best player of that side really, arguably the ginger cardboard cut out was.

I don’t think they played much together. Cantona was banned when Scholes started with them and they maybe had one season in the same side properly before he retired.

Biggest mistake Leeds ever made that selling him to them.
