It's quite simple.

A panel of hand chosen experts picked the 6 standout sporting achievers of the past year taking into account that, for fairness, they had to include a person of colour, a handicapped person, a member of the lgbtq community, a Northern Irishman, an Englishman and a midget. I think, given the criteria, they have done a decent job.
To vote, all the public had to do was to say which personality they thought was better than the goalie and why in no less than 100 words. I think they got it right.

And, before anyone asks, no, it has nothing to do with the BBC promoting a sport they champion to the hilt. Nothing.

In the early 90s Bob Nudd, got more than votes than the next best 3 contenders combined, but didn't win it.
The BBC disqualified him on the basis that the voting form had been printed in the Angling Times.
Think it was the year Lineker won it.

I remember that ! Fairly sure I cut it out and voted for Nudd.

How can these hand picked experts ignore players that won the CL, PL & FA CUP plus the Super Cup ?

The treble has only been done twice, the team these players play won ' team of the year' our striker won 'over seas player's our manager won 'coach of the year'. But these experts didnt think that any of our English players should be up for SPOTY.
Instead a woman who won nothing and saved a poorly taken penalty and told the taker to fuck off won SPOTY
