BBC world service memories

My only connection to football results and City when I was at sea was the world service. I'd even get up in the early hours of the morning to get the football results as the time difference often meant 5pm at home could be 2am where we were. It was a nightmare at times as the signal would fade in and out at the vital time leaving me not sure if we'd won or lost.

In 1974 I was living and working on a kibbutz in Israel. Just me and a random Wolves fan found an old wooden hut with an even older valve radio and we managed to get a very weak signal on the World Service to listen to the League Cup final. City lost 1-2. Waste of an afternoon.

1998 working on a cattle station in Queensland. Tiny radio in my cane toad infested portacabin house and the World Service seemed to come in and out of range every 5-10 minutes or so. Was always hoping to hear the City score when I did get some signal.

Would then drive 115km to the nearest town (Normantion) on a Saturday to read the weekly versions of UK newspapers with the match write up of the match from the previous weekend. Was eventually allowed to watch the highlights on a Monday night on SBS, but that meant everyone on the station had to watch it as there was only one satellite receiever for every TV.

Not the World Service...but in a similar vein I remember waiting in the car to board a ferry home from a family holiday in France and my dad managing to tune into (the recently launched) 5 Live.

Was the start of the 94/95 season and we beat Everton at home 4-0 with Walsh, Rosler, Beagrie, et all. It was red hot, but the Fanta Limon and Raider bars never tasted so good.
