beautiful stars!

Driving from Wells, Nevada at night to Twin Falls, Idaho was one of the most amazing drives I've ever had. Pulled over, got out and just stared at probably 100k stars in the lonely pitch black night.

Then realized my loneliness and insignificance and got back in the car and drove on.

If you're into this stuff, there's a light exclusion area on the Iveragh peninsula in south Kerry, think it's called a dark sky preserve? Anyway it's from Killarney through Sneem, Cahirciveen, Glenby, Killorglin and back (the ring of Kerry) and if you take some of the back roads out (especially near Waterville) it's fantastic this time of year.

Edit: only one of it's kind in the northern hemisphere apparently.

4 more hrs and you'd be in the Big City. Northern lights were visible Saturady night

I was in Australia at Uluru (Ayers Rock) a year back and the milky way seen from there is simply astonishing. I mean it is *bright*, like a big bright band across the sky.

I hadn't realised until I watched stargazing live months later that in the northern hemisphere we only get to look away from the centre of the milky way, i.e. we are in it, but looking outwards into space. So we only see the edge. We are on the spoke of wheel, looking only at the rim.

In the southern hemisphere, you are on the spoke, looking at the hub. Which is an altogether more spectacular sight, since that's where most of the stars are.[/QUOTE]

I lived in Adelaide and one of the best experiences I had was night stars from the hills, far from lights and my Lord.never seen anything like that (quite close is egypt western desert). You are right . When I was there it looked different and that is what I thought it must have been me being at southern hemisphere. I was even luckier because it was comet Holmes if am not wrong was passing by. It was amazing magical nights that I never forget and badly miss:'(

Lovely area and as I believe I've mentioned my grandmother was a sometime Driggs resident, had a house on 1st Street I believe, for the last 20 years of her life. I've walked.to the little bar on the main Street quite a few times from her house before she passed.
Probably O Rourkes, you should see Jim's daughters now..OMG
