I was in Australia at Uluru (Ayers Rock) a year back and the milky way seen from there is simply astonishing. I mean it is *bright*, like a big bright band across the sky.
I hadn't realised until I watched stargazing live months later that in the northern hemisphere we only get to look away from the centre of the milky way, i.e. we are in it, but looking outwards into space. So we only see the edge. We are on the spoke of wheel, looking only at the rim.
In the southern hemisphere, you are on the spoke, looking at the hub. Which is an altogether more spectacular sight, since that's where most of the stars are.[/QUOTE]
I lived in Adelaide and one of the best experiences I had was night stars from the hills, far from lights and my Lord.never seen anything like that (quite close is egypt western desert). You are right . When I was there it looked different and that is what I thought it must have been me being at southern hemisphere. I was even luckier because it was comet Holmes if am not wrong was passing by. It was amazing magical nights that I never forget and badly miss:'(
