Bell Summerbee and Lee, with the 1970s team around

100 grand for Keith MacRae … hard to believe that a few years prior to that Joe Mercer refused to pay 45 grand for Gordon Banks and he went to Stoke City. We did ok without Banks but we’d have been brilliant with him in goal.
I vividly remember some highlights on TV showing his performance in Scotland after we bought him but before his debut. He was truly a leaping salmon, producing save after save. I was really excited to see him in the flesh. My old man played a really good standard of footy as goalkeeper and said to me after a couple of games that he was not the answer.
I did a few years of footy scouting pre data analytics and mobile phones even. Watching someone for a few games or these days watching YouTube highlights or show reels is a complete lottery. The fee was not MacRea’s fault but he was really average.

Wasn't John Charles ,who played for Leeds, a black player.
And there were one or two others who played at the early years of the 20th century, but I can't remember their names.
The player you are thinking of being black was John Charles of West Ham not the one who played for Leeds.

  • Ken Mulhearn - Liverpool
  • Tony Book - Bath
  • Glyn Pardoe - Winsford
  • Mike Doyle - Ashton-under-Lyne
  • George Heslop - Wallsend
  • Alan Oakes - Winsford
  • Francis Lee - Westhaughton
  • Colin Bell - Hesleden
  • Mike Summerbee - Preston
  • Neil Young - Fallowfield
  • Tony Coleman - Ellesmere Port
All English first X1 with Neil Young born closest to Maine Road and Tony Book the furthest away.

Eight of that team born within 40 miles of Maine Road.
The last all English team to win the English First Division League title with an English manager & coach.

Manchester City FC.....more history than the Romans !!

From memory Samaras looked like a world beater on his highlights video!

Possibly, I get a bit mixed up with some of these players names, from when I was a child in the mid 1960s.
But thanks for throwing his name into the mix,I had forgotten about him.
It was before my time but i do remember reading about him i think he was from South Africa, sadly he turned to alcohol and died alone penniless.

They played 42 league matches so a total of 462 appearances (42 x 11).

Those eleven players made 420 of that total, with the late great Tony Book playing in every league match at the age of 33.
  • 41 - Heslop, Pardoe, Oakes and Summerbee
  • 40 - Young
  • 38 - Coleman
  • 37 - Doyle
  • 35 - Bell
  • 33 - Mulhearn
  • 31 - Lee
Great days with my favourite games being Rags and Spurs away.
