Never been accused of being a happy clapper before but I don’t mind going against the grain now.

1. Pep tends not to buy duds, technically limited players or one-trick ponies.
2. Mendy’s only played a few games for us and is still learning his role, particularly his defensive responsibilities.
3. The lad’s a beast going forward. He’ll get more assists than a hand-job specialist on x-hamster.
4. He may be sacrificed for a more defensive player in certain games. Horses for courses. Pep doesn’t put out the same side every week and won’t want to get burnt by the dippers again.

I’d like to walk back some of my comments about Mendy and Delph. I’m confident in my opinions which can be unorthodox but when I see mistakes in judgement and opinion I like to rectify it. Delphs defense and overall ability I understated and has much more value than I argued against. Pep will optimize the balance correctly.

Delph and Mendy bring different qualities to the party but Deph's attacking capabilities are often undervalued. He is a better defender than Benjamin for sure, but the latter is such a dynamic player in possession, that he is capable of utterly destroying the league's best right backs and opening up the game for our attackers.

The bigger question is the role of Leroy, who I see longer-term as a centre-forward in the Henry mould. With Delph in the team, Leroy is devastating.
