Genuine question to those questioning his defensive ability (and anyone else who has a view), but is it not possible that these perceived weaknessses and gaps being left by Mendy are also down to Pep's instructions? Mendy is asked to do a different job to Delph and he contributes a lot more up field. Seems inevitable to me that Mendy will be caught out more as he can't be in two places at once, but surely he has to prioritise being where People asks him to play?
True, if he's bombing on that should be expected and there should be someone covering but I don't think that is why his defending is being questioned. It's been when he is back he switches off and some of his one on one defending has looked very poor, even basics like how square on he is. Against Newcastle he actually barely overlapped so that must have been on Pep's instructions but that just meant with Sterling and Mahrez just going inside we had absolutely no width. The difference to the side when we play Same and Sterling wide is huge. Obviously that's not Mendy's fault but so far I'm much happier with Delph and Sane on the left.
