Pep needs to work with him, hence the things he said in his presser. Great going forward but a bit suspect defensively, he was exactly the same for Monaco. Confident Pep can turn him into an all round wc fb given time.

Would not be surprised if he is top of the assists at the end of the season....he will create havoc on that left side.

First and foremost he is a defender, stopping goal scoring opportunities is his first concern. He has much to learn in this respect.
Guardiola is as aware of his defensive inadequacy as he is of his potency offensively.
I think peps reference to social media is important, as much as some fans love it, in the long term damage CAN occur..

That said he is a joy to watch.

Going forward he is immense, but he needs to work at his defensive game. Bellerin went round him too easily on Sunday for his chance and his passing/touch in our half was sloppy.

That said I am confident these areas of his game under Pep will soon improve

+1

Mendy probably isn't going to ever be a top-top defender - but under Pep he should improve.

Going forward, he's tremendous. But our attackers need to anticipate his crosses better - on occasion, Mendy would beat his defender and was obviously going to make a cross and yet our attackers were not sprinting into the box in anticipation.

Another thought - Mendy's crosses aren't always on the ground - he'll play an areal ball into the box quite often. If we're thinking about another attacking option in the upcoming windows, perhaps a taller attacker who is excellent on the ball, and who otherwise fits our system (good first touch, links up well, participates in defense, etc.) might improve our side.

I agree his defensive game needs to improve but it's over simplistic to say he is a defender first and foremost. I don't think the manager would see it that way and there will probably be more demands of him going forward over the course of the season than there will defending. He needs to play his part defending but our system is designed in a such a way that other players are also expected to cover when he bombs forward.

It's funny, I thought he defended brilliantly, barring one late moment, as a full back against Chelsea...

In fact, in his limited time at City the only two games he's been suspect at the back were this last one; his first full competitive game in almost a year against new look top opposition; and one last year against Liverpool; against a then unknown to be quite so brilliant Salah. I'll acknowledge he wasn't perfect defensively in the other games, but not so bad every other comment would mention it.

Watch the games against Watford, or Bournemouth, or Feyenoord from early last season and see how little we struggled in his area of the pitch. Because those games will be far more reflective of his upcoming season than this last one. Of course they'll be shaky moments, but do you all really think we'd be playing the way we do if it was as systematically flawed as some of your are implying?

Love this kid , attacking wise he is immense, will be good to see his progression throughout the season , he was pep’s number 1 choice for a reason , plus I kinda like his social media side think it’s good for the club having somebody who likes to have a bit of fun tbh , better than pogshite who just tweets his new hair style once a week
