Monaco's £45m fee for Benjamin Mendy has been too high for City but there has been a breakthrough in recent days with a deal close. [Mirror]

Let's hope this deal doesn't collaspe. Mendy always seemed much harder to get because Monaco don't want to sell him... but they will at the right price + he wants to leave...

Doesn't do any harm and makes sense for us to try and negotiate a lower fee until now. There's not been any reason to rush through the transfer other than potentially losing out on a player to another club so why wouldn't txiki attempted to get a better deal. What doesn't make sense however is for us to still be trying to negotiate when pre-season has started. We'll pay the fee set by the selling clubs, with no fullbacks on the books we can't afford not to, there's no benefit holding out trying to save money when them having a full pre-season is more important to us. I'm fully expecting this and a few others to be finalised before we travel to America. Txiki and co. have been working on getting Pep in for years and now they finally have done, he's been working all year to get the players he wants. He simply can't afford to mess this up and i don't believe he will

Journalist + the source from the article?

Its been talked £40m the past 2 weeks, which will probably be what it takes to buy him. This saga needs to end with Txiki paying the fee.
