So looks like we paid what they wanted.....yet again. Could have saved a lot of time and effort doing that from the start.
Time and effort for whom ? Why should we rush in with an offer that they wanted. At the end of the day we got our man and by all accounts he`s been injured so he would have missed at least the derby game.
Too many impatient fans.

Why don't people understand? that is not how negotiations like this work.

Mendy doesn't have a Release clause, mendy can demand whatever they want for him. If you go in and slap £55mil on the table, they just look at you like a fool because they know that is the minimum they will get and then they just ask for £60mil.

So paying exactly what they have been asking for (a world record for a defender) is a good negotiation then?

Pretty sure we've paid more than they initially wanted. I recall fees of £39-43m being touted as the asking price with City offering £30-35m.

That little weasel Alves has probably cost the club about £10-15m in the Walker/Mendy deals

Yes. Absolutely.

Fair fucks to Monaco for holding out. But not all clubs will do that. That is the power of negotiation.

You're pissing into the wind with that one my friend. It's such a simple concept, yet people just can't seem to comprehend why these things happen the way they do.

we don't really have idea how much they initially wanted and how negotiations went out. Plus, we were definitely screwed by Alves and it was always going to cost us the money.

He got offered double the money to play in a better city and a near enough guaranteed league title seeing as Monaco are being dissembled.

It's really not that hard to understand.

Monaco demand 57mil or w/e they want, we can then judge that. If we are comfortable paying that then we have a maximum. Our goal is to then get under that, if we can't we can't. Monaco might not want to actually sell him that desperately so if we are comfortable going up to 57mil then alls well that ends well, we get the player and monaco get the money but the negotation isn't good nor is it bad.
However, if Monaco say 57mil and we go Okay, that's fine. We start negotiating at the maximum we want to pay, but Monaco have an assest they wouldn't mind keeping and know we are desperate to sign so they say, well actually we want 65mil now and we either pay it or go elsewhere. This is bad negotiation because only Monaco will win. We either pay more than we want or we don't get the player

So by tomorrow night we could have David Silvas heir, Brazil's future number 1, a first choice right back from a team who finished above us, a Real Madrid full back (granted an unwanted one) and Frances first choice left back. All by 21st July.

Not bad going by a guy only in the job because he's Pep's mate.
