Bert Trautmann - R.I.P

Very sad to hear he passed away.

What a man, what a story. Must have been hard to make his way into the hearts of English football fans, having fought for his country and having been an enemy soldier. Great sign of British sportsmanship that he was met with respect and affection, not for his nationality, but for his character and his performances on the pitch.

The good old days, when working class people had unwritten rules of fairness. Makes me feel proud just to look at the man's face. No need for fancy hairdos and designer tattoos, or rehearsed goalscorer's celebrations to express individuality, just a modest guy in a simple tracksuit, but so much determination and character in the guy's face. From POW to FA Cup hero, against all odds! Thanks to all City fans for embracing the man in your city and in your team with so much simpathy and friendship!

Regards from Bert's hometown, Bremen, North Germany

I remember him well from my boyhood attendances to Maine Road. He was one of the best I have seen ,ever. R I P Bert Trautmann.

Although I'm an Everton fan I felt that I had to register to pass on my condolences to all the City fans on the loss of Bert, who I was fortunate enough to meet on a couple of occasions when I worked in the Legends Lounge.
He was a really nice, down to earth fella who I'm sure will be missed. RIP Bert.

Thanks, Garymac. That is really appreciated. Condolences to all you Evertonians on the loss of Dave Hickson who passed away recently too. I know he also had a special place in the hearts of Evertonians.

Kind regards.

Welcome to BlueMoon and a great post too :)
I'm actually going to buy some Becks beer today simply to raise my glass to Bremen's finest.

I only saw Bert once - just before a game at Maine Road in the 80's in the social club. I was looking at blokes in their 60's plus behaving like a teenage girl at a Take That concert..........
