Best and worst away day you’ve been on

So many its hard to narrow down.

Great days. Winning in Munich, Jesus at Southampton, a crazy Norwich on a Monday night, Seville, Shaktar, Brightwell at the swamp, just being in the Nou Camp. Stoke fancy dress, WBA Frankenstein fight and paddling pool plus hundreds more. Wolves when we hadn't won for 17 games. Gidman at Huddersfield.

Shit days. Halifax, the swamp, Anfield, being thrown out at Madrid, not getting in the San siro, Leeds, god we were shit a lot of the time but even they were good days.

The Stoke cup final was the best, never thought I would see us win anything, ever. Blackburn away on the day of the Hillsborough disaster was a day when I was devastated at our result but listening to the drama unfold on the way home gave me a dose of a much darker grim reality. Another one was driving from a job up in Annan all the way down to Portsmouth to see us lose 2.0 when Kompany had a mare at centre half and me telling everyone who would listen he's utter garbage and not good enough for us.

Was at blackburn that day watching us get a hammering, was at maine road v charlton watching us be brilliant... two disasters on both them days sure put football into perspective

I went to that one alone as I was living in Hounslow at the time. Away end was loud and there was a bizarre Kompany OG. Ran out comfortable winners in the end. I saw a bloke doing yoga in his underpants in that park by the river on the way to the match. I also bumped into the Chicken Hut lads who were so pissed that they thought i'd been on the coach down with them.
It was freezing and wet that day (just before Christmas, wasn't it?). Fair play to him. Agreed, though, great away day; good game, good win, Joe Hart back, and we were loud. The Pablo Zabaleta song really got going that day.

For me, I have have fond memories of the 3-2 win at QPR, November 2011 I think. Loftus Road is a great ground, especially under the floodlights. It was a tough game but we came through it with fight and quality, the attributes of a title-challenging team.

Worst was probably seeings us lose 1-0 away at Wycombe in Div 2. The town's not too far from where I grew up so I was able to go on a school night. It was cold and we were shit. My Dad and I sat next to Curly Watts and he looked pretty miserable, too; not helped by people shouting "Raquel" to punctuate the mediocrity we were having to watch on the pitch.

Best, Blackburn, May 2000, promotion back to the Premier League...

Worst, my God how do you choose? Maybe the 1-8 at Boro (or any game at Boro) but one that stands out is Barnsley away some time around Christmas '96. The realisation that we really were "shit, and we're getting worse", that another relegation was going to come our way, and that Frannie wasn't the saviour we thought he would be. Freezing cold, steaming pools of piss behind the stand, and couldn't even bring myself to join the "rather be in Barnsley than Barbados" chant...

That reminds me of another shit away. Barnsley in the 80’s when the football special ran over a horse on the way and we only got there at half time for a 0-0 draw!

Best - Newcastle, the Yaya master class setting us up for our title win the following week. A night out in Newcastle afterwards was brilliant and the first time it felt like we could really win the league.

Worst - FA Cup final replay v Spurs. Only game that I cried all the way home from, on a Bullocks coach back to Stockport.

Remember a pre season friendly at Rangers in the mid seventies a great day out. Bears happy to drink with us in Glasgow and near lbrox. Went on the train and got no mither just friendliness and footy talk very unusual at the time.
In complete contrast was in Dublin for pre season game against Celtic in the late nineties nothing but mither all day a huge element of their support seemed to hate us for the crime of being English, ironic as a lot of them claim rag or dipper alliegance. In fairness most of the Scottish seemed ok, but the crowd from Belfast were scary. Game played at Tolka park which was like Edgly park before the Cheadle stand. Segregation non existent and thought it a result to get home in one piece. Thought they were also horrible at the Etihad in CL.
