Best card for commuting to work

I don't drive and have had jobs all around Greater Manchester and Cheshire. From Bolton to Altrincham to the airport and have just finished a contract in Crewe. Like you buddy the commute has never bothered me.
Maybe the communte didn't, but working in Crewe is enough to send anyone over the edge. I also work in Crewe and takes me probably 90 minutes door to door on the train from Preston. Doesn't bother me at all, quite enjoy a coffee and my book on the train.

You're right Crewe is "special". Right up there with Oldham and Rochdale.

If it's working for one of Europe's elite businesses in manufacturing then commuting hours are something I can bypass... the job isn't guaranteed but if I do get the job I'm looking at learning to drive anyway. So even if it's commuting for 4-5 months then so be it.

90 minutes isnt that long really and like you say, for a job in a company that opens up opportunities, well worth it in the long run.

Spending 3 hours a day travelling to work is a waste of your time. I'd rather move closer to the job than have all that messing about.

As your in Heald Green is their a train from the airport to Bolton?

Maybe one of your new colleagues lives this side and possibly carshare.
Can you not get a train direct to Bolton from Manchester? Or if the bus journey isn’t too far, you could get one of them fold up bikes you can take on the train and forget the buses?
Fair play to you anyway, good luck.

The Blackburn - Wigan\Wigan - Blackburn calls at Bolton, and calls at Victoria.

The times are pretty BS to be honest!!

There's a train that goes from Heald Green to Bolton, I'd have to leave heald green 6am every day, but I'd get to the place 7:30 everyday, and the work hours are 8:30-4:30 or 9-5...

The 8:30-4:30 hours would best suit me just for travel wise.... especially travelling back home would just be a bus to Bolton then train from Bolton straight to heald green.

Looking at how the train network works around greater Manchester I realise what an absolute joke it is. Times are all over the shop, and you would expect the times to be consistent during peak hours as well. Doesn't stop them from increasing fares though.

3 hour commute for a £12-£14 per hour job. That's insane.

Just another example of how the banks and establishment have turned us into a nation of compliant little worker drones.

Bentley? Fair play, I think most of us couldn’t pass up the opportunity to go and work there just for the experience depending on what you do.

You can't come on bluemoon if you're driving.

Unless you like driving in rush hour, public transport is fine - you can't expect a direct service between Heald Green and every station north of Manchester. Journey time by car might only be 30 mins but how often is the M60 snarled up?

Is there a direct bus from Salford Crescent to the workplace? Might well be more frequent and quicker than train to Walkden and then bus.

the monthly ticket at £118 seems best bet.

Friend does Bolton to Manchester train, it's the worst ever for crowding. You won't even get a folding bike on, passengers actually standing in toilets I am told
Not in that direction for the OP

Well good luck with getting the job. Double check the trains as there do seem to be a few to Bolton. I think Bolton Council did not want the tram going there as they were scared it would just be an exodus of people from Bolton to Manchester. Bit short sighted of them.

I do pretty much the same route in reverse every day, a bit longer in fact. Takes about an hour in the car in the morning, 90 mins going home. Wouldn't dream of using public transport, it's too many connections.

Whereabouts in Bolton is it? 20 mins cycling is about 3 miles or so. Plus, if there's no cycling facilities at work, I wouldn't consider that.

It's at the Logistics North industrial estate, inbetween over Hutton and little Hutton.

There's a 38 bus that runs every 10 mins, that goes from Salford Crescent to Salford RD (a 3 min walk from the workplace), the only problem is the trains connecting from mine to Salford would mean being dependant on the 6:05 train to Piccadilly from heald green..... that's if I want to get to work on time for 8:30.
If that train were cancelled I'd be screwed, but it's a service available to me.

Good luck with the job! You'd think that a major employment site just 3 miles from the centre of Britain's biggest town would have good public transport, but it appears not. The 38 from Salford (or Piccadilly Gardens) is probably your best option, as you've said, because it runs so often. I used to catch a bus towards Bolton at 5pm at the Crescent and the buses used to often get snarled up in traffic, but you might be okay the opposite way.

The nearest train station is Moses Gate, about 2 miles away, not too far a cycle ride. MG might look like the arse end of Beirut, but it ain't too bad. There's lots of cycle storage at Bolton, so you could buy a cheap second hand bike and store it overnight for the 3 mile ride if there's problems with space on the train.
