Maybe the communte didn't, but working in Crewe is enough to send anyone over the edge. I also work in Crewe and takes me probably 90 minutes door to door on the train from Preston. Doesn't bother me at all, quite enjoy a coffee and my book on the train.I don't drive and have had jobs all around Greater Manchester and Cheshire. From Bolton to Altrincham to the airport and have just finished a contract in Crewe. Like you buddy the commute has never bothered me.
You're right Crewe is "special". Right up there with Oldham and Rochdale.Maybe the communte didn't, but working in Crewe is enough to send anyone over the edge. 90 minutes isnt that long really and like you say, for a job in a company that opens up opportunities, well worth it in the long run.If it's working for one of Europe's elite businesses in manufacturing then commuting hours are something I can bypass... the job isn't guaranteed but if I do get the job I'm looking at learning to drive anyway. So even if it's commuting for 4-5 months then so be it.

Maybe one of your new colleagues lives this side and possibly carshare.
Can you not get a train direct to Bolton from Manchester? Or if the bus journey isn’t too far, you could get one of them fold up bikes you can take on the train and forget the buses?
Fair play to you anyway, good luck.
As your in Heald Green is their a train from the airport to Bolton?

Not in that direction for the OPFriend does Bolton to Manchester train, it's the worst ever for crowding. You won't even get a folding bike on, passengers actually standing in toilets I am told
I do pretty much the same route in reverse every day, a bit longer in fact. Takes about an hour in the car in the morning, 90 mins going home. Wouldn't dream of using public transport, it's too many connections.
Whereabouts in Bolton is it? 20 mins cycling is about 3 miles or so. Plus, if there's no cycling facilities at work, I wouldn't consider that.
You can't come on bluemoon if you're driving.
Unless you like driving in rush hour, public transport is fine - you can't expect a direct service between Heald Green and every station north of Manchester. Journey time by car might only be 30 mins but how often is the M60 snarled up?
Is there a direct bus from Salford Crescent to the workplace? Might well be more frequent and quicker than train to Walkden and then bus.
the monthly ticket at £118 seems best bet.
Not in that direction for the OP
Good luck with the job! You'd think that a major employment site just 3 miles from the centre of Britain's biggest town would have good public transport, but it appears not. The 38 from Salford (or Piccadilly Gardens) is probably your best option, as you've said, because it runs so often. I used to catch a bus towards Bolton at 5pm at the Crescent and the buses used to often get snarled up in traffic, but you might be okay the opposite way. It's at the Logistics North industrial estate, inbetween over Hutton and little Hutton.
