Best Chippie

My local fish bar did banging old school fish and chips, it was divine, right up there with the best ive ever had but sadly it closed permanently not too long ago. Not sure exactly why as it was always very popular but the prices were shooting up so perhaps it just wasnt feasible any more.

It recently was replaced by a new one, tried it for the first time and I think it is comfortably the most disgusting fish and chips I've ever had the misfortune of trying.

Firstly the chips were rank, skin on chips which I utterly despise and will never touch, thats just a way for people to get away with not peeling spuds the lazy fucks. Im always wary of skin on fries in fast food places and make a point of asking about them and will avoid ordering them but never expected a chippy to do it so they caight be entirely offguard, had i known. I'd have instantly passed. oil wasnt clean either.

then the fish had a weird yellow tinge to it, had a smell and after taste to the batter that suggests they soaked it in something but I've no idea what, either way it didn't fit and made the batter inedible to me. The actual fish was as tasteless as it come and had infused the weird batter taste/smell. I couldnt tell whether it tasted like it was actually off or whether it was simply that disgusting, i think (and hope) it was the latter. barely managed more than a mouthful and wouldn't even risk giving the dog the rest just in case so the fish got binned and the dog got thr chips. Safe to say i will not under any circumstances be returning.

Lees chippy Hollyhedge Road Benchill. Bloody lovely and cheap as well. Close thread.
Gonna give that one a try as it;s a short detour on my way home from work. Never tried it before. Do they do a good fish and chips or is it mainly Chinese ?

I bought fish and chips a few weeks ago from a shop in Hale that has new owners.

It was a minging pile of shit that cost me £11.50 and had a taste so far removed from the flavour of traditional chippy offerings from the past, I honestly have no idea how they concocted such an aberration of a meal.

Chippies just wouldn't exist if they were pioneers from the past, it was that bad.

There is a great English fish and chip shop in St Kilda Melbourne called Northern Soul...they even do curry sauce and puddings.
Always a queue.

Its the best fish and chips i have had. The batter is always crispy with no soggy bits, the chips are great. I would definitely say give it a try. It is classed as a Chinese. Ordinarily I would not generally go to buy fish and chips in a Chinese takeaway. Would normally just go the English chippy. Lees has converted me.

Thanks mate, I'll definitely give it a go.

If you fancy a short drive over to North Wales, Bells in Rhos-on-Sea had some of the best fish n chips I've ever had.

Ferryhill Chippy, Ferryhill Road, Irlam.

Voted Best Chippy in Salford 2023.

Off to Filey for a few days early next month during the international break. Anyone got any good chippy recommendations for that part of the world?

Happy days in Filey back in the day.

I’ve tried most of the chippy’s in Filey. I think the best is probably a sit down called CJs. It’s at the top of steep road that drops down to the prom and the sea.

The walk along the beach for miles is lovely towards Reighton Sands. You’ll see Billy Butlins mansion in the cliffs and the first Butlins is further up the coast.

There’s a lovely little cove south of Filey, that’s just like being in Cornwall, called North Landing. There’s a reasonably priced good quality food place on the ramp down to the sea called Boathouse Burger and Grill, it also sells big bottles of cold San Mig for about £2. They also do cheap boat trips along the coast, and you can hire paddle boards and kayaks from there too. The pub at the top of the ramp is a bit shit. It’s a nice walk in either direction along the cliffs from there.

There’s also another excellent but a touch pricey chippy in the village of Flamborough itself.

North of Filey I’d avoid Scarborough unless you’ve got kids that would like the brilliant waterpark called Alpamare. Their outdoor pool is like a hot bath, the water slides are great and you can have a beer poolside.

Robin Hoods Bay and Whitby (Mr Chips on the other side of the river is the best sit down chippy in Whitby) are both worth a visit. As are Pickering or Malton on the way home.

Stopped in Malton a couple of years ago on the way to Scarborough.... there was a chippy near the Morrisons called Stuarts of Driffield, incredible!

Haven't had a good chippy in Manchester in years! It's always soggy small fish not feeling it for that price...

Would love a recommend in south Manchester if anyone has one!

I hate to say it but Yorkshire chippys always do the job! Especially in the north east. I remember buying a pea bomb which was deep fried mushy peas. Fucking delicious!
