Best gangster flick of all time?

Early Scorsese film in which Keitel plays out Martys younger days and his running contradiction between his Italian catholisism (sp?) and the family mob members.

Millers crossing (John Turturro legend)
White heat (no1 is better than cagney)
Carlito's way (sean penn immense)
Mou gaan dou (pisses on the departed)
City of god (for its cinematography)
La Haine (vinny the best out there)
On the waterfront (he could of been a contender you know)

Great list mate, dont know if I'd define La Haine as a gangster flick but it's an absolute powerhouse of a film, sick.

I'd have t agree with 'The Godfather 1&2' and then followed by 'Goodfellas'.
If you haven't already, make sure you read the Godfather novel, an amazingly entertaining book.
I thought 'Road to Perdition' and 'The Long good Friday' were also excellent gangster flicks, you'd have to give a mention to 'Casino' too although I thought it inferior to 'Goodfellas'.
'A Bronx tale' is one that hasn't been mentioned, I think De Niro may have directed or produced it aswell as having a supporting role, well worth a look.

One thing though, I think Scorsese lost his way big time in recent years and his portrayals of Irish-American criminals were nowhere near his work on the Italians. 'Gangs of New York' ws an absolute shambles and 'The Departed' eas hugely overrated, couldn't believe it won best pitcture and director.

There's a couple of films mentioned on here I will have to check out.

For me, Goodfellas. Absolute top quality, De Niro's character, for me, is more terrifying than Pesci's Tommy Vito. There's just a sheer sense of menace.

One of my favourite scenes for you :-)

Love Carlito's way too, Tries hard to reform himself but all around him are dragging him down ...

American Gangster is the best gangster movie of recent years, Russell Crowe plays an absolute blinder in it, not often Washington is second best in a film

My fave type of film. Typical bloke really. Some of the classics for me:-

Millers Crossing (The whole Danny Boy scene is genius as is the John Turturro scene in the wood).
State of Grace was another classic gangster flick.
Once upon a time in America (Fairytale of NY was based on the theme tune from the film).
Goodfellas, Casino, Departed, Long Good Friday Godfather 1 & 2 and to be controversial I loved 3 as well. The wieght of expectation crushed it.
