Was it Rising Star that was picked for TOTP when at number 41 but technicians went on strike so the show was cancelled?
Was it the same week that was meant to be the first (and only) performance by the Freshies? The record stalled and Chris Sievey never got his band on there again...

Going to bend the rules on the first one. The Top 40 didn't come into being till 1978 so I am going for Todd Rundgren with I saw the light which reached 36 in 1973.
The second one is really obscure again from the early 70's This is your heart by Dennis Linde.
Linde was a successful songwriter although they were mostly sung by other people.
His most famous is Burning Love.

Neither of these New Order singles made the Top 40. Unbelievable
I'd add Age of Consent and Love Vigilantes to that list but strangely neither were released as a single?
