Must admit, when I saw this thread reappear, this was the track that immediately came into my head.

As you said Jim, Bono has become a little nauseating but their early stuff was good and Unforgettable Fire and (especially) The Joshua Tree are fantastic albums.

This has always stuck in my mind since I first saw it, back in 1987 (1988??)

"A little"? Just a bit! Anyway, you could also add "I still haven't found what I'm looking for" and "with or without you" off that album to the list of good song intros.
