Hulme is looking better nowadays. Not too far from the Quays either.

Lots of new developments near weaste mate. I am looking myself so have had a good look around.
Didsbury is okish but you will get robbed, it is a terrible area for burglaries afaik.

Northern and green quarter are decent. Deansgate has a few reasonable prices but you need to keep your eye out.

Tydlsley seems the best best for accommodation quality and distance to town etc.

Hear is one near media city, just been let but it gives you an idea.

<a class="postlink" href="http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-to-rent/property-49742290.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-to- ... 42290.html</a>
There'll soon be another to let in that development. Bit of a shithole that City Links. Some proper scrotums live in there.
Swinton isn't a bad shout as long as you find somewhere not too far from the pubs and shops

Or how about this gem?
<a class="postlink" href="http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-to-rent/property-29449840.html#_full-description" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-to- ... escription</a>
A choice of flats available in Briar Hill Court. Conveniently situated above the precinct. Briar Hill court is truly the pride of Salford with that big fuck off arrow down one side of the building, the vibrant community, the pound bakers a minute away and the development benefits from secure parking, onsite laundry room and 24 hour security. £88 a week mate. Can't go wrong. 15 minute walk to media city or there's the 50 bus outside

Not a bad shout in all honesty. With all the recent redevelopment work especially the new University building it's changed beyond all recognition and it's a straight run up Stretford Road and then across to the Quays.

I'm in Whalley Range and love the place despite what some have to say. Another area that's changed now (bar the odd incident) and also quite close to the Quays.

Appreciate the suggestions. Is the general consensus to use Right Move? Any other suggested websites?

This is all crazy, mad to think I'm seriously looking for my own place.

I'd wait until you find out what your take home pay is. That will dictate where you are living. There's plenty of places on spareroom.com to rent at good prices and it cuts out the unnecessary estate agent screwing you for every penny through fees.

I live in Castlefield and around the basin near dukes and the wharf is nice and easy commute to media city on tram though as stated your looking upwards of £650 for 1 bed or £800 for 2. I've lived around Piccadilly and the greenquarter and this is the best by far just enough out of town that you dont get noise or dickheads loitering around

Aah bless you mate, there's nothing like having your own gaff though. I'm sure as a student you have a wealth of experience budgeting food, beer etc. Just make sure you don't f**k about with your rent and utility bills. My mate did recently and found himself behind on rent to the extent the eviction notice was being typed up. My mate was stressed to fuck...

So yeah, keep all that sorted and you'll be right mate. As I said, its quality having your own gaff. I only 5 minutes from the quays and Lowry myself as a matter of fact. I'll never move from here unless its to Didsbury or one of the nicer parts of Pendlebury. That's how much I rate it. And rightmove is the ideal site, it collates a load of ads from different websites and estate agents. Good luck bud. Both the job and home hunting.
