Billy No Mates

You are not alone!
It isn't about City - so many men have a small number of friends, especially in middle age.
Reasons for that are well-discussed, but it is contributing to a mental-health crisis among us.
I have been to concerts and films alone myself.
I go to restaurants alone sometimes.
Bloody well done for beginning such a thread.
Other than my OH, I have the sum total of ZERO friends. Plenty of work colleagues, but non that I would call friends.

I no im going to get ridiculed for this ....

Currently sat in hospital in london..

Havent seen us play since i gave up my season ticket after the wigan cup final...

Mainly due to 1 thing . I have 0 mates that support city .

I used to go to games on my own, travel on my own and in then end it got a bit lonely .

I also stopped gping to away games down here as had a few things said to me for having a southern accent.. my dads family are from manchester ...

He told me when i was 5 red was banned from the hpuse and if i didnt support city i had to to to borstal

I no people are going to find this hysterical ,

But ive had a failed suicide attempt back in 2010, im back in the priory weekly and now have had my second major op in 12.weels and im only 43 ....

I want to get back to live games but i really dont want to go it alone .....

Laughs out the way but id appreciate some city mates ,,,,,

Sad fucker i no ..

People say to him, just join a supporters club. Thats kind, friendly, normal advice.

But in reality, walking into a pub on your own to randomly go to a table of people is no easy thing to do. I’d hate to do that and I’m not a particularly shy person. Ha. Don’t think anyone would want to do that if they had a choice.

In reality it’s hard to do what people kindly advise so people then don’t do that and the problem continues…

If I was in the OPs situation I’d like to be added to a small txt group from people in that area. Get to feel people out first over txts. If it goes well and he feels more accepted then a suggestion of going to games together would be more natural.

Thats my advice to you buddy. Think @give it to gordon asked if you wanted to be added to a what’s app chat. Hope something comes of that and I wish you all the best mate.

I lived in Kent until 2012 and have had a season ticket since 1988.

there are loads of people travel up from kent, PM me and I will send you some contacts

This is exceptionally common. And then, for some, their relationship ends and the collective friendships disappear with it. I am happily married, with four adult children and a small number of close friends. I am fortunate, but I have experienced break-up and loneliness...very much so, and I know far more people in that position than I know people surrounded by company.

Absolutely no ridicule from me. No doubt there's a lot of folk on here in a similar situation. As has already been said, maybe consider a supporters club? A list of OSC's can be found here - https://www.mancity.com/supporters-clubs

There is at least 3. Definitely worth a look.

Supporters club gets a fair bit of gip on here but the best advice I can give the OP is to join closest one to him great way to meet fellow blues and have a break from real life problems, I know loads of Southern based exiled blues all of whom are top lads.

Lovely to see this thread showing BM and Blues at their best and well done to the OP for putting your cards on the table mate.

I’d echo trying to join your local City branch as that’ll introduced you to upwards of 50 like minded people, some branches have way more. Keep posting on here and you’ll find connections will be made and people will start to engage you by PM.

I likened my circumstances to leaving secondary school. For years and years I'd been in and around the same building, the same corridors, seeing the same people, pretty much. The mates I'd grown close to, strangers on the first day but best mates by the last. The old 'jumpers for goalposts' scenario, the irreverence shown towards certain teachers and the respect towards certain others.
Then suddenly, BANG! You're the new kid in the workplace, strange and unfamiliar surroundings, adults you'd never met before and with whom you have nothing in common. The pressure to earn enough to pay your way at home and to lead some kind of social life. By fuck did I start to miss school and my mates!

Oh, and by the way, thanks for beginning this thread. Much respect to you, fellah.

I'm very happy in my own company, so doing things on my own never really bothers me .... sometimes I go to games with two or three mates, and sometimes I go on my own, and it doesn't really bother me to do that, i'll still talk to strangers at the match now and again, yet i'm hardly the most confident person in the world ....... but I can fully appreciate that it's more difficult for some people to do that, than it is for others.

The Supporters club idea is your best bet, get in touch with one of them, go and meet them, you'll definitely be welcomed because they want new members, you could make some great new mates there ... but you need to try to toughen up a bit too for your own sake .... if anyone has a go at your accent in the future just politely tell em' where to go .. or walk away, and don't think any more about it .... or just laugh it off, and change the subject ..... whatever you do, there are bigger things in life to worry than that mate.

Life clearly hasn't been easy for you, but all is yet not lost ... you seem like you're an okay guy, so dont let things get you down and try to think positively from here on .....and well done mate for putting that post on here, it can't have been easy.

Never feel you will get ridiculed from City fans for opening up to how you feel you have been brave and honest cos us guys don’t talk enough about how you feel. You have taken a massive step forward and we are all here to offer support and make you feel as one of us, City fans will always support each other as long as your not a knob.

I grew up in cork city when Keane and Irwin were the only thing that mattered, being a child following city was tough in school too. Being the only city fan. fuck it i was captain of the football team I wasn't bad. But the moral of my story is I went it alone on my own I still only know a few people whos supporting them now... I should have said one person said I shouldn't be captain because i supported city in the lower divisions so i knew knotting about football lol. Few new city jerseys flying about these days though so happy days... Sometimes we just do it for ourselves... Best of luck Blue.

You'll have more mates than anyone else at this rate, blue :)

Good on you for opening up, and good luck.

I am a member of a supporters club, but it isn't as easy to join them now as it used to be, you need to go through the club first now and either have ST or membership card

I’ve been a member for over 40 years I’ll check with the sec far as I know just need a membership number which as a former season ticket holder he may well have. Joining a branch is the way forward if he wants to travel with like minded blues and make a few mates.

It certainly is a great way to make mates, but thsse days you have to go on city website click to join supporters club then get an email back and wait, dont know when they changed it to this method

Are there no fans group near you pal? Go on line and search. We as humans need interaction with people and when that stops things like mental health issues can crop up. Also always good to have a few people watching your back even if a sounding board. City aside there must be some walking groups, societies, book clubs etc. get your self out there! There are plenty of good people around. All the best with the surgery!

I’m 72 years young and reckon I probably have 3 good friends, the type who help you out with no questions asked……

Can I borrow ?.....

Too soon?

:)

I hope the OP is reading this and gets the feeling that he really isn't on his own, there are an army of us that on a given day specially when we are playing we are one great big family.

Even the happy coughers who complain about smoking corner and of course the fucking smokers complaining about the happy coughers :)

A few years back now God only knows why

Well I suppose, in this day and age, if the club send tickets to the supporters branches they are gonna want to confirm that they're genuine city fans or not, with the required amount of points ... and not just any Tom, Dick or Harry who just fancies turning up at the odd city meeting, because his mate's gone to it ... or someone who's just wandered in from the lounge bar downstairs .... the club will want fans details, and that in turn will lead to increased ticket checks at grounds like the Bernebau to confirm all is well.

In fairness the club DO get a lot of flak from City fans about their ticket policies these days, and you can see why they would want to try and improve matters ..... the club will be the first to point out that our support in Madrid the other night contained a healthy showing from 182 official club branches, that both obtained tickets from City and then turned up at the game itself, so I don't think the club are gonna be changing this policy anytime soon.

Just the times we live in I'm afraid ....
