English leagues were 2 points for a win up until 1981 I think. Much later in other places before 3 points for a win came in as well. Think the '94 World Cup was the first with 3 points for a win in the group stage if I'm right?
So, change isn't always bad. I don't think world cup football was particularly broken pre-1994, but there aren't many people who would want to go back to 2 points for a win, me included.
As for too many games, think England could live with just one cup competition tbh and drop the league cup.
Having said all that, I do still wish Blatter would GTFO though.
