Dear Sir,
Having read an article this morning about Fifa looking at changes to make extra time more exciting i came up with the idea of using the ice hockey model.
I'd like to show you rule number 84 within the NHL. <a class="postlink" href="http://www.nhl.com/ice/page.htm?id=26498" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.nhl.com/ice/page.htm?id=26498</a>
The important part in this rule is the loss of one of the skaters from outside the goal. Meaning that the sides are reduced from 5 skaters to 4, giving more space and creative freedom which leads to more goal scoring opportunities for both sides.
If you have ever watched the NHL and have seen overtime in action, i'm sure you'll agree it's frantic and very exciting.
Why cant FIFA implicate something similar to the NHL? Talk of bringing back the Golden Goal has to be a huge no. From people i have spoken with, they are set against the Golden Goal, as the game becomes even more negative from both sides.
If say, that after full time both teams are level then extra time could be played with 2 less players from each team. Those 2 players would obviously be at the managers discretion.
Also, if a team has had a player sent off during normal play, they will play with 8 players and not 9 and so on.
This idea will give more space across the picth, leave gaping holes for attacking players and would make the extra time situation a lot more exciting for the neutral fan.
I'm more than happy to discuss this further if need be and you can contact me on the above email address if that is the case.
I look forward to hearing from you
