My dad has Parkinsons. He also has a blue badge which my sister and I use when we take him anywhere. He has no car as he can't drive due to his condition. My car is a Range Rover. Can you advise me what to change it to as obviously he shouldn't be driving around in it?

Do they still make the blue 3 wheelers as this is obviously more befitting of his status for being a raspberry.

If he doesn't have a car, then why does he need a blue badge?

(not a piss take, i am genuinely curious fella)

my mum is 87 and can't walk far even with a stick and has a blue badge but no car. you tell me how she's going to do a supermarket shop unless someone else (usually me) takes her in their car.

I'm a Blue Badge holder, you have to pay parking fees unless you have the Tax Exempt road tax disc, this will cause more moaning,i get free road tax (worth about £200 per annum) including my weekly amount of 'Mobility fund',this pays for (choices)taxis, buses, new car etc..You can exchange your allowance for a new car every three years, but you forfeit your money.I don't always use Disabled parking bays,i need exercise for my problems so i often park further away from where i need to go,this is my choice..but on a 'bad' day it's nice to get close. My car was bought with my wife's redundancy money seven years ago 05 reg,i could go out and get a BMW,Audi etc etc but not necessary at the moment.

And likewise, with the approx 5000 miles I do a year its not worth me having a new car out of my DLA,so I take the cash which goes into my Bank Account.

Get it delivered?

You know full well what the question was but I'll repeat it anyway

why shouldn't disabled blue badge owners pay for parking?

As a Blue Badge owner myself,I`ll have a go at trying to answer.
I don`t mind paying parking fees but due to my disability it probably takes me 2 or 3 times longer to shop than an able bodied person. Therefore a one hour stay that you may need, would turn into say a 2 or 3 hour stay for myself,to do basically the same shopping.
If Local Authorities were to help and make us pay less per hour, than an able bodied person, then I have no gripes with that at all.

Right... I don't think Blue Badge owners should pay for parking for the same reason why you or I shouldn't pay for parking...

We pay road tax, our rates in general and it's just a money making cash cow that has backfired on many councils because many people now avoid town centres because of the parking restraints.

People preferring to go to places such as The Trafford Centre for the free parking, happily pay extra for the products they buy but avoid going into town centres such as Bolton/Bury/Oldham because they are forced to pay for parking.

if Free parking was brought back into many of these centres the use of them would increase.

This wouldn't happen, because of greedy councils.... so why are BB Holders not paying and we are?
Well I'll use an example, my local town Bury....

There is limited free parking in the town centre, the only places to park for free are at Tesco and Argos... Argos is closer to the centre but is still a 5min walk, 10min journey if you're Physically Impaired.
Tesco is great parking, but takes awhile to get to the centre, including crossing over the dual-carriageway.

The only solution for genuinely disabled people is to park closer in the town centre... there are spaces, but not loads.
These spaces are Pay & Display, and if you are disabled you would be using these spaces most of the time so you would be paying more because of your inability to use the car parks more further away that are free....

so the idea is to discourage you and me from parking right in the centre, parking further away, leaving spaces open for disabled people to park closer.

We are discouraged because of the cost, disabled people are encouraged because it is closer parking.

But as I said in my first point: parking is shit in these town centres such as Bury and many people, including badge owners just go elsewhere such as The Trafford Centre which is more convenient.

Why should genuinely physically impaired people be penalised for needing to park closer to their destination?
The councils charge for this parking, it isn't their fault councils charge.

There will be/are people taking the piss who hold these badges, but is this the fault of genuine people who are physically impaired?

Most people who are physically impaired need these badges, and use them when they need to... excluding themselves for incurring parking charges because of their disability.

it is shit that we have to pay for parking, right now I can park further away and I actually prefer the exercise... unluckily for some they can't have a jog into town and easily carry heavy shopping bags all the way back to their vehicles like I can...

Also, an able bodied person, upon seeng that a car park nearest their favourite pie shop is pay and display, may drive around looking for a free parking space further away, knowing that the extra walk will do them good.

I reckon. Plus what hard nosed bastard is gonna deny them a little free parking? It's not your money.

Someone, earlier, asked why disabled folk should get free parking.
It may be for the same reason that they get DLA and free road tax, ie. it's expensive being disabled, a lot of special equipment is needed, which is not necessarily paid for in allowances, and a whole wage is often lost through inability to work. Free parking is just a part of society's recompense for this.

A mate of mine who lives in one of the busier areas in the south, paid £800 for a 3 year blue badge, he's obviously not disabled, but the badge which has just run out was priceless to him, says it's the best £800 he's ever spent, so surely the system needs to be tightened to stop bent council workers exploiting it

Would love too, but my mate of 30 years might not be too happy

Im also in Bury and im curious as to why you think parking in Bury is shit, there's a rake of car parks all around the town centre that service every part of the various shopping areas ?

The bus routes too can get you as close as you need to be. My next door neighbour is a stroke patient and blue badge holder who is very unsteady on his pins and can't walk far. He goes into Bury every week day but never takes his car. He can get closer to the shops and market from several bus-stop than any of the car parks.

I always considered Bury to be one of the most compact town centre ive ever been to, although slightly ruined now by the new part. I also really dont get that you think going all the way to the Trafford Centre from this area is more "conveniant" than going into Bury, ive always found going there a nightmare with regards to traffic.

There are car parks, NCP, on The New Rock and opposite.
They are multi-storey and I'm sure Blue Badge holders have to pay?

The interchange is superb but if my understanding is correct then you are not eligible for a Free bus pass if you are eligible to drive (if you are over 60 you get one anyway regardless of driving license)
So disabled people with a drivers license will have to pay for their bus fares.... and again if my knowledge serves me GMPTE is the most expensive for public transport per mile in the country.
Cheaper to drive into Bury and actually park for parking lol, the cost of using the Bus is disgraceful in Greater Manchester.

As for your comments on the Trafford Centre - it's all opinions. you don't seem to like it, find the traffic awkward etc...

I don't personally buy much from there either, I find most things there overpriced, but I did actually say this in my previous post.
Just from speaking with friends/family they seem to prefer it, rather than walking through Bury Market in the cold rain, with the risk of being mugged by the smackhead in the subway....

I do most (if not all) of my shopping Online... I have found many disabled people now doing this themselves, this falls into my line of work of I.T Support where I have helped many disabled/elderly people whilst using their computers figure out how to shop online... Once they overcome their fear of entering their bank details (lol)

if you don't like Blue Badge Holders using their badges, and have some issue with it (this goes for anyone in this topic) then go and speak to your local mp, start a facebook campaign, start voicing your concerns.. You will find people who think just like you, and who knows you might just get these badges banned?

And then Disabled people everywhere will not be able to park where they want to for ease of access, they will have to pay for parking in areas we have to...

But I can guarantee the demand to the Social Services for helping people get from A to B will increase, the cost to the NHS will increase - when stroke victim Deirdre parks further away from her destination and whilst walking awkwardly for to long, managed to slip, fall to the floor and break her hip.

There has been a BMW parked outside our office for a few days now, it hasn't moved. It is displaying a blue badge parking permit.
Anyway I was chatting to the pub landlord next to the office and the subject of this car came up.
We have a road closure in place for armed forces day and a suspension of parking. We have a stage for the salute of the parade that goes in this space.

It turns out the owner of the BMW has gone to France for four weeks !.
To you and I these carpark spaces are £3:10 an hour yet this blue badge holder can park here for a month free of charge.
The council can't move it as it has a parking permit and its doing anything wrong !!

So the parade might not go ahead because the route isn't locked and secure. It would be ashame to cancel armed forces day because of this twat. If we are lucking the council might move it on the day of the road closures and suspended parking.

It's ridiculous to me that you can park in a parking bay for a month costing the council 1000's of lost money because this bay is out of action for a month.

The car is also overhanging the over parking bay making tight to get into that space. The traffic warden said his wheels are inside the bay so nothing he can do !

I worked at a company in Bradford years back and the loading bay was constantly being blocked by inconsiderate drivers. The guy in charge used to move them with his forklift then have a good laugh when the driver returned looking perplexed.

Aah, simpler days.
