Interesting to see how even though the theme is broader most people have stayed with the mellow angle of the (excellent) initial five. I'm not going to buck that trend. Natalie Merchant is forever associated with 10,000 Maniacs but has released more solo music than she did with that band. She went quiet for a number of years as a result of parenthood and illness but then last year release a new album that she'd started writing in the latter stages of the pandemic. I rather like it and though there's some quite literary/longer songs on it, I've gone for the shortest and pithiest (and with most cowbell).

Many of the acts I follow haven't branched out into a solo career, so my initial thought was that this category might be a challenge for me. However, I think I have identified a handful, although most of them are well-known, so don't expect anything too obscure.

I loved John Fogerty's 2007 solo album, Revival. To be putting out stuff this good 40 years after being in one of the biggest bands in the world is impressive.

I had you down to nominate John Fogerty :-) I did wonder if given the company we are in you might have gone for something from Blue Moon Swamp though.

When looking at the other 3/4 of the band that went along as "LAPDOG" in the late 90's, I couldn't find any of their songs on Spotify, but did see there's another band in recent years with the same name. Oh well.

I saw Todd, Dean, and Randy playing in 2000 after TtWS disbanded outside for free in a local mall parking lot as LAPDOG sponsored by a local radio station. True story and very surreal now that I think about it.

and their first songs from 2000's Near Tonight "See You Again" made it onto TtWS's 2013 New Constellation as "I'll Bet On You". Now you know the rest of the story. Good thing some old songs never die. :-)

You know, I was thinking this same thing earlier. But I think that is as much to do with the real life trend as it is with our choices.

I.e so far the majority of what I have thought of, have gone down the mellow route with their solo stuff, either as the bulk or the best of their material. It is only really when you go to 'side project' bands or collaborations that it seems to go the other way.

Also it mostly seems to be people from bands going solo, or starting side bands. But rarely an established solo artist starting a band.

Today's selection is one of my favorite solo collaborations between Karen Orzolek (Karen O stage name) of the garage punk / indie rock Yeah Yeah Yeahs and musician and producer Danger Mouse. (We'll likely be seeing him again this week too...)

Their 2019 album Lux Prima was a favorite of mine from start to finish, and her voice really shines on the songs.

One of the less mellow songs on the album, this track came out full force vocals as only Karen O can deliver as a:

I can't find that song or album in the US on Spotify either. Not listed for me either.

Bummer as I had 2 examples of other artists yesterday I couldn't find there. The side projects and solo associations might see more of these this week it would unfortunately seem.

You are correct. Revival doesn't seem to be on Spotify.
