Blue Moon Playlist Review Club - Season 2 - Episode 27 - Out on blue 6 - Gone Too Soon (pg 438)

A really busy 2 weeks so I didn’t make it all the way through the list. Probably less than half actually.

Our of the original 5, I enjoyed “Slow Learner” and “Super Bon Bon”.

I remember saying years ago that there was only one Stevie Wonder song that I really like (“Superstitious”), but “I Wish” is a very good song. I also liked the Stranglers song that followed it.

I would have half expected you to have quite liked the Paolo Nutini song.

Made By The Bass

Thanks to @Coatigan for putting this playlist concept together. I figured this would be a heavy thumping groove mix, and it more than lived up to expectations. Lots of good variety too with most of the bassists covered I would have anticipated hearing from.

Of the initial selection, I actually enjoyed all 5 for a good opening variety. If forced to pick a top 2, it would be “I Could Give You All That You Don’t Want” – The Twilight Sad for a well-done indie selection and “Super Bon Bon” – Soul Coughing.

The Big Winner
“Theme For Great Cities” – Simple Minds
. This was released before my time in hearing this band, and I didn’t get to properly check their back catalogue despite owning Glittering Prize: 81/92. Musically, this track was tops and enjoyed the bass lines and even the lack of Jim Kerr’s distinct voice singing to cement this as one of theirs.

My top 10 other new tracks (not yet heard in some or no particular order):
  1. “The Night” – Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons, nearly took the winner, a great song
  2. “Sunrise” – New Order
  3. “Peaks and Troughs” – We Were Promised Jetpacks
  4. “SAD” – Indoor Foxes
  5. “hometown” – cleopatrick
  6. “Burnt Toast & Coffee” – High Fade
  7. “Root Down (And Get It)” – Jimmy Smith, the source always wins for me
  8. “Florescent Adolsecent” – Arctic Monkeys, need to check out that 2007 album
  9. “Butterflies” – Archie Bronson Outfit, very nice bluesy vibe
  10. “Them Belly Full” – Bob Marley & The Wailers

Best of a song I know:
“Around the World” – RHCP
, first track back to the classic lineup indicating the band was back at it on top of their game

Top 10 tracks I knew but enjoyed listening to again (in some or no particular order):
  1. “I Wish” – Stevie Wonder
  2. “Lowdown” – Boz Scaggs, the bass sound on this song is so distinctive
  3. “The Fish” – Yes, RIP Chris Squire, you were always great on the stage in concert
  4. “Bernadette” – The Four Tops
  5. “The Magnificent Seven” – The Clash, great bassline moving this song along
  6. Barbarianism Begins at Home” – The Smiths
  7. “Psycho Killer” – Talking Heads
  8. “Seven Cities of Gold” – Rush, so many options, had also considered this album, but instead chose the first track post-80s indicating their bass would be back going forward
  9. “Thank You” – Sly & The Family Stone
  10. “The Real Me” – The Who, brought to us by “not-the Real”

It's on the playlist, wonder if have I included a version that can't be streamed in the US?
Ah, that's probably it. I was listening to the version off of Wide Awake In America, but all good, and as long as you chaps can see it.

I can also see it off of The Best of 1980-1990 and the remastered The Unforgettable Fire. So there are 3 playable versions in the US in Spotify.

I was just missing my slow and dreamy bass fix on the list! ;-)

Another eclectic collection, i particularly liked the fact I hadn’t heard any of Coatigan’s firstfive tracks, particularly The Twilight Sad who I must investigate further.

Not a big PN fan but loved ‘Through The Echoes’
Also liked
High Fade
Live
Burnt Toast and Coffee

Faves I heard before
Grand Master Flash reminded me of my ‘Brambles’ days
Pixies
The Smiths
Blancmange the VERY long version
The Four Tops
New Order

Is it a pre requisite that Rush have to appear on every playlist?
