Blue Moon Playlist Review Club - Season 2 - Episode 27 - Out on blue 6 - Gone Too Soon (pg 438)

"This one goes out to the one I love..."

And with that first verse and familiar notes last night, I knew I was in for a rare treat encore from Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit as they covered that R.E.M. song for only the 10th time ever! As Jason wraps up his US tour before 8 straights nights in Nashville in mid-October before going "Overseas" to Europe and the UK in November, I can honestly say that was the best setlist and show I've seen from him.

Not the same setlist every night, we were treated to beautiful acoustic gems from @Mancitydoogle's nominated Southeastern album such as "Elephant" and "Different Days", which were firsts for me seeing live and simply amazing versions. Throw in "Save The World" and "Cumberland Gap" on hopeful songs I hadn't seen live before, and last night goes down as my favourite performance yet. I chose the Friday night show of the two he's playing because Black Pumas are playing tonight in a different venue, and I'm not missing them either.

Black Pumas has all my favourite "Colors", and I'm also aware that "Black Moon Rising" isn't going to count here, so I'll swing back to Jason and avoid Bimbo's blackboard. ;-)

The one song Jason didn't play during the encore that I had seen him play in 2022 was this Drivin’ n’ Cryin’ cover sung by lead guitarist Sadler Vaden. That was from his Georgia Blue album, inspired when that state turned from Red to Blue in the 2020 presidential election. Well, given where they were playing last night and the help being provided from the most toxic Governor option likely ever to be put on a NC ballot, this state's Purple status could be leaning Blue by the time early November arrives. I look forward to our state of covers on an album if the chips fall into place and Jason is so inspired again.

And for MCD especially....

Sounds like a night to remember @Black&White&BlueMoon Town , I can’t wait to see them here in November, out of interest what was the capacity of the venue?
I also hope your state stays Blue.

DPAC holds 2712, but I don't think the upper sections were filled from what I could see when I looked back and up, so I'll go with 2112 last night. ;-) The acoustics in there are very nice.

I had more than a few inquiries from friends who saw similar pics from me from last night and other recent shows on how I often make it down low and close to the shows I care the most about. I will only say that it sometimes pays off to check into the unsold seats on the secondary market once one is into the venue, as a seat to stand in close up is a terrible thing to waste. ;-)
I also hope your state stays Blue.
My fingers are crossed and I will only say that I feel much better about things now than I did in late June. The potential Gov sinking two ships is a real thing.

Off to Black Pumas tonight, can't wait!

Probably the least 'controversial' playlist we have had, or most accessible at least. Good variety in the opening 5. When Milltown Brothers started off, I thought, didn't have Rob as a Stone Roses fan. Had a bit of a rummage around their other things though, enough to come back to. The Jayhawks pick of the 5 for me.

Nice bunch of classics in there, with Mitchell, Tull, Davis, Hendrix, Ocean etc.

Overall favourites - Portugal.the man, Lorraine Club, Grizzly bear, Bell X1, Ozark mountain daredevils.

I'm not a Stone Roses fan, but The Milltown Brothers were OK.

That Bell X1 track is excellent.

Sadly Loraine Club are no longer.
Like a previous incarnation ‘Gangs’ they have moved on.
I posted a harder mod/rock song by Gangs on the ‘what are you listening to now?’ thread which I always liked. Much more like The Who.

Basically two brothers, Jordan (wife’s godson) and Zach have played guitar and sang since they were five or six. Never had an interest in doing anything else. Both self taught. Jordan is the singer but the younger Zac is a real musical talent.
I remember marvelling at them playing The Smiths in their front room at Christmas and a nine year old Zac playing Marr’s intricate guitar work effortlessly while Jordan sang’I will go out tonight’.

Zac picked up a keyboard early on too. That’s where Loraine Club’s sound came from.
Zac went into DJaying and gigs in Britain and Europe now. He’s made a name for himself as ‘Prozak’. Doing quite well I believe although it’s no longer my kind of music.

It is a beautiful album. If it wasn't 18 songs long, it would have been on the album thread by now. I think it is fairly traditional enough as well, not sure there is that much of a twist to it.

If you want a bit of an alt-folk album, have a go at Conflats by Out Lines, for some good power accordian.

Did you ever give this a spin @threespires?

For the most part a really easy listen.
A couple I’m tempted to skip but haven’t really had to that much.

Some great throwbacks for me.
Jethro
Charlatans
Neville Bros
Elbow
Bell X1
The War on Drugs

Great listens.
And I’m partial to a bit of Miles Davis too.
