Bluemoon Angling Thread

no, ive been keeping my gear as light as possible, got my little measuring mat :), im going to invest in some small digital scales and one of those mesh weighing slings(christmas money)(in fact im going to invest straight after this post )

on the canals i blank more than i catch ,in fact 3x as much to be honest, but theres so much to see wandering and when you do get one in the net the rewards are so much more satisfying than pulling them out of a commercial, i will carry on with commercials as a social with my fishing mate, but i dont think ive been to a commercial for over a year .

so far my pb canal perch is 43cm
my pike pb is 83cm but it was a skinny sod :)

i get so much pleasure out of buying the different lures, ive got shit loads haha, cant stop buying them, ive got more lures than ive caught fish on the canal :)
The roving approach with spinning light gear is great on a canal, something I've not done recently though. I need to get my lure gear out myself and get on the bank soon because i can walk to my local canal and adjacent river in 10 minutes, so i have no excuse not to. And I'm also guilty of having bought more lures than I need: )

I have korum digital scales which are accurate but i cannot read the display properly now due to condensation/water damage. I need buy some more because when i next catch a specimen fish, especially a Barbel, i want to know what it's accurate weight is.

What make are you buying?

I had a look at those and they look good value for the money, but time will tell if they last.

I rang Preston Innovations earlier and got through to Korum dept. Told them that my the display on my scales had got condensation in and I can't see the digital reading properly. Said to contact after sales with an email and a photo of them turned on. They asked how long I'd had them and I said 18 months to which they said they were out of 12 month guarantee. Told Them i have several Korum and Preston's products and like their tackle . They said they'll see what they can do. So I'll hang fire on buying scales because they're usually pretty good in resolving problems with their gear.

Weather has been a bit rubbish just lately, unless you're barking mad, like a few on here BMR :) ,have a wander, look for the bait fish scattering, you start picking up little signs ,I'm no expert but on the canals and rivers the hard miles pay, cover as much water as you can, even if you can only get out for an hour or two, I've found it a totally different and more enjoyable experience, and when you hit a decent perch (43cm), wow better than a 15lb carp imo ,I've not had huge fish but the condition of the fish compared to commercials ,they could be different species , not to mention the lady joggers in their tight apparel :)
where do you go on the canal?

Out on Friday for the first time this year to a local fishery that stays open all the way through. Caught 4 Bows and a Brown. Great to be out again.

not such great news from my club fishery. Storm Arwen took the boathouse and all the trees on the West side of the Loch. Haven’t seen it yet but very sad for the owners who have put so much love and hard work into the place. It will take 40 years or more to restore it to what it was.

when i got there i was going to swerve it as it was frozen solid so went for a walk instead but when i got back a boat had moved out so had an hour fishing...it was lovely in the sun but bitter cold in the shade

My brother and the lads went to the Staffs-Worcester canal last Thursday near Stafford which is a bit of a haul from Bury. When they arrived they found, to their dismay that it was frozen. As it happened a boat passed by breaking up the ice so they were able to fish. Contrary to all logic, they did better than we've done in the summer catching roach, perch and skimmers and our mate lost one that he claims was the mother of all perch.

Fishing eh ? Barmy.

Incidentally, not long after the boat passed, it came back in the opposite direction the driver saying that the ice further up was too thick to break up.

Quick update from me: two whole days on two local reservoirs with deadbaits resulted in two blanks and a big row with a bailiff (which I won). The frosty nights killed things.

Finally some milder weather so I did a whole day on Saturday on the River Tees in a hurricane. This was interesting actually. In the second swim of the day in a deep hole under a tree I had two runs on an injected sardine. The first I missed and the second fell off mid fight. All went dead so I threw a large jerkbait through the swim and got a hit first cast which resulted in a small but pleasing pike around 7lb.

Several more swim moves didn't get any more action for the two of us but in that wind, with entire trees coming downriver, I was happy enough to catch.

Headed out yesterday for first ice fishing of the year, got skunked

Does “skunked” mean you didn’t catch?

How long would people typically fish on ice for? And how do you ensure you don’t go through the ice and die?
Skunked means didn’t catch
A lot depends on how well your warming shack is set up, I’ve seen people with portable wood burners out there, we just had a little propane heater. Some people will spend all day out there, snow machines and ATV’s buzzing around, even pick up trucks. I’m sure people do fall in, the ice yesterday was about two feet thick so no chance of going through that
