Bluemoon Angling Thread

Imagining the scenario from their point of view certainly made me feel better about the situation! Though not till much later, of course :-)
Been on many multi day river trips across the west, kayaking with raft support. Nothing like finding river booty from a flipped raft, found a whole case of miller one time circling in a big eddy...I've donated quite a few cans to the cause too mind you

Talking of the Dane it would be about 82 and myself and my best mate would go there with my dad fishing mostly Croxton and Byley. We loved it on there, had some great sessions trotting a stick float with my waders and bait apron on.

We used to fish our local park lake and met a guy who was new to fishing. He was a teacher and had a car so our ulterior motive was to get friendly so he would take us on the Dane and other places as neither of us had a car at 18.

Teacher Phil was a bit of a **** in speaking down to us as we were from a council estate as he thought we were just streetwise rough n ' ready urchins. He thought he was well to do middle class but he wasn't really. The more we got to know him the more ****-like he became. Anyway Phil my mate Steve and I were fishing on the Dane just below Croxton Weir I was it was treatment works and Phil pissed off to the chippy for some scran. I noticed an adder slip out of the bush so quick as a flash I scooped it in my landing net. My cunning plan was that my mate would open Phil's seat box and I would tip the snake in ready for when Phil got back to reach into his box for his flask of coffee.

As I was running down the bank with slippy G, the bastard slipped my landing net and slid into thick undergrowth. I was fuckin' gutted I couldn't play the prank on the miserable tight ****.

Beautiful. I fish the Erne system every year but down in Killeshandra near Cavan. I'd ask around especially if there is a local tackle dealer and start there. They won't tell you the prime spots but you should catch. The local bar is worth asking at but beware of tall tales from the landlord.

The beauty of having a caravan is that you'll have time to explore and find places that aren't as popular. Do you have access to a boat and engine ? Useful for finding deeper water.

There are nothing like as many bream as there used to be but there seem to be far more big tench. Best of luck.

Getting a boat next year....but our caravan site is private and i like fishing from the bank...and noone from the public can get in. I used to fish (relatively) small lakes....Lough Erne is HUGE and i just fear im sat where there are no fish at all LOL.....however there is so much wildife, i was sat the other night and an otter practically came up and sat beside me....its amazing.

Wasnt aware there would be tench....assuming (and have been told) lots of bream, roach, perch and pike....and trout. Im happy enough going for the bream, roach and tench.

Wondering about methods and baits etc....maggots? on the bottom or at what depth?

If you know it, im close to where the Kesh river meets Lough Erne

I don't know that area but the species are thesame throughout. You'll probably encounter some good roach/bream hybrids as well.

Do you know what depth you've got on front of your stretch of bank because that will go some way to dictating your method ? The shallower it is the more distance you'll probably need so, if it is shallow near in you'll be talking feeder fishing. Anything over 5ft at a couple of rod lengths out, I'd try float first.

Getting breeding nodules on my nose now as I plan my annual season-opening trip to the Wye. Very excited.

Have been out quite often on the canals and getting some decent bream in ones and twos here and there. Also fished a Leamington Anglers reservoir near my house in Warwick which is a fantastic fishery, not too commercial, with a good head of crucians. Unfortunately, they've recently stocked it with tench between a quarter and a half pound. After the eighteenth, I was getting a bit fed up of them. Doubtless it will settle down.

Anyone else been out ?

Good luck mate. The first week or two are often tough, not least because the fish haven't been feeding on bait. I've been for a few short predator trips but not had much of interest beyond jack pike and smallish perch.

Gearing up for the rivers myself and going to be hitting The Trent and Ribble over the first few weeks. I'm having a week on The Wye myself in September again. We did really well last year and I'm looking forward to it.

Good job you are coarse fishing the Wye mate.
The salmon fishing is bloody awful!
Give me a shout if you are Hereford way.

Brilliant. The fish will come. You quiver-tipping/legering ? What bait were you using ? Sounds like it needs some feed going in regularly but not too much.

Thats what i was hoping....it doesnt get fished often as its private....so i was thinking of regularly feeding it, even if im down there and not fishing.

I had fairly standard silverfish ground bait....and using maggots. Ive been using those polaris floats with a feeder.....ive never really taken to quiver/legering....i like to see a float. Ive read good reviews, and they are really easy to use.

That's exactly the right approach. Lough Erne is huge so they aren't going to be there immediately. As we always say; "feed them and they will come". Little particles like hemp or groats are always a winner because they keep passing fish in the area hunting around for little morsels.

Polaris are really good for deep water and there's nothing like the sight of one lifting up when a fish takes it. Presumably you've got a really strong match rod and a small feeder.

Quiver-tipping is an entertaining art form in itself so don't write it off. It gets so that you can often tell what sort of fish is biting.

Either way, keep updating us how you are doing.

yeah i had been reading about using hemp ground bait....will give it a go, and start feeding that area :-)....and yes re. the rod and feeder

Cheers mate, i may have you tortured for advice :-)
