Snatched a quick couple of hours on the river this afternoon with the lure gear. Fished with worms on a little jig head just twitched around for the perch. First cast and a pike hammered it near the bank and I was amazed to actually land it with 6lb fluorocarbon trace. It was 4-5lb but a really stunning looking little pike.

Couldnt get a touch after that so moved to the canal, driving around to my favourite urban spots. Switched to my new favourite tiny Salmo Slider lure after a break off as it was getting dark. Pretty much the last cast back at the car and I hooked and landed a perch of about 14oz.

Back home in the bath with football on the telly and the smell of roast lamb drifting up the stairs.

Another afternoon out with the lure gear yesterday after my boys' match and before the City match. The river had come up and was coloured so after a fruitless hour or two wandering I headed for one of the local canals which is weed choked but tends to stay clear. To combat the weed I used a small Salmo Slider jerkbait which stays high in the water. First cast in a new area and a 2lb+ perch appeared at my feet, gulped the lure down, I lifted the rod and somehow the lure (with two trebles!) popped right out of its mouth and the perch shot off. Nothing more happened around this area apart from a wonderful sight of a kestrel hovering within a few yards of me (I froze under a tree), dropping down and coming up with a mouse, almost within touching distance.

I had a final half hour or so so drove to a marina which gets hammered and poached but I wondered if they might not have seen mini jerkbaits before. I quickly landed a jack pike. On the way back to the car I had a chuck between some barges, hooked a fish which unbelievably turned out to be a skimmer bream which had wolfed down the jerkbait.View attachment 58375

I was planning to do some lure fishing on local Canals in the near future, (Llangollen and Montgomery Canals). I have looked at those Salmo lures...are they worth it ? The rate I loose them it may be an expensive day out.

If you are using expensive lures like these the "done thing" is to use 60lb braid and a heavy trace so that when you do get snagged, because it happens, the hook straightens and you get your lure back. That's when pike fishing though.

I have one of the absolute tiny Salmo Sliders which I do use on my perch gear (8lb braid) and it is a risk and I did lose one in a tree once. But they only sink really slowly so the way to fish them is to twitch them through the top half of the water, reducing the risk of snagging a lot. It's a great method - you impart the life into the lure by making it flash, and I do believe that 90% of lure anglers are using the same old rubber shads on jog heads which the fish can wise up to.

New to bluemoon .
Matched fished all my life and lucky enough to have fished for a few of the top NW teams over the years . I just concentrate on the local NW canal circuits now , luckily they are thriving and generally fishing well . Happy days :-)
