I have a mate who suffers from IBS. We were fishing at Rutland Water and his bowels are starting to churn so quick smart, beaches the boat, leaps ashore, heads for the closest bushes to do his business. Oh my god the noises that came from behind those bushes. He was there for at least 10 minutes bubbling and squirting.
Finally, keks up, straightens himself, has a leisurely look around with a cheesy grin on his homely visage.
That expression didn‘t last long when he sees what was behind him during his performance........
not more than 10 meters away, a very substantial birdwatching hide with at least half a dozen pairs of binoculars trained on him.

Just been out with the Ultralight lure gear again for an hour. I wanted to try a method of jumping little curly tailed grubs up and down on the bottom. I walked the marina without a touch but then out of the corner of my eye saw what every predator angler loves to see: a shoal of roach skittering across the surface as they were attacked from below. I changed to a white shad lure, cast to the area and hooked and landed a perch of about 1lb, maybe 1-4, first cast. Next cast the lure was whacked as soon as it hit the surface and I was into a better fish. My heart leapt when I saw it was again my intended quarry: a big, bold perch. I didn’t have my scales but it was certainly over the 2lb mark and my biggest for a long while. The light went within a few minutes and they switched off so I’ve just got home, delighted.
I can highly recommend ultralight lure fishing. Basically you use a tiny wand of a rod, light braid and little rubber lure mounted on jig heads. Some have started calling it urban fishing because it’s perfect for inner city canals. it’s cheap, easy, you can keep your gear in the car and just snatch half an hour whenever the chance arises. It’s also good gentle exercise because you walk and cast in every interesting spot.

Well in DD, nice perch there. You've just whet my appetite to dig my spinning gear out now. I bought a nice Korum 8ft 30gm rod and a Cast king baitrunner about 2 years ago which I can't get used to so I might load small Daiwa spinning I have with braid. I've only had a couple of jack pike so far but haven't fished much. Like you say great for canals on short sessions so I have no excuses now the nights are drawing in. I bought quite a few different spinners and those jelly perch lures but they don't cast more than 10 yards as they're too light. I'd probably cast a bit further with a fixed spool reel. I'd like a perch of 2lb as it would beat my modest PB which was about 1.12oz, didn't weigh it though.
As stated earlier I tried a stick float on the river, looked great as usual, but the wind buffeted everything around and submerged weed was a nuisance most casts in the main flow. I did catch a few little uns though, but only if my float went close enough to reeds on the opposite bank. Was getting fed up when the missus brought me a brew down, bless her,so had a think and baited up the eddy to my right and set my tip rod up. Had lots of little uns again but no decent chub, just think it was a bit too bright in the sunshine. The good thing is that I had six different types, dace,chublets,roach,gudgeon, perch and a couple of what I think are ruffe(see pic) all on maggot.. Biggest of any was only about 6oz, although was glad to see the perch as I was thinking about DidsburyDaves method of small lure fishing here as it looks like fun and maybe chub might go for em too?
Was waiting for the sun to set hoping the chub would show at dusk, but my neighbour wanted a hand with something so finished about 7.15. The total catch might have looked ok in a keepnet but I dont use em. Took a pic of the swim as I set up, it always looks good.

Sounds like good fun pal, nice pic of a daddy's ruffe there. I can't remember the last one I caught. Not common nowadays. Well done: )
Yes, daddy ruffe, thats what I was told they were called, used to get em on the cut along with gudgeon when I was a kid. I must say too, that the stamp of gudgeon in the river is far better than a canal, even if they are a small fish. Was probs the first type of fish I and many others ever caught.

Bloody hell, we always called them "daddy ruffe" but the Angling Times poster my brother and I had in our room only called them "ruffe" so I thought my dad had made it up.
They died out for a few years on our water around the same time as that perch disease but seem pretty widespread again.

You've inspired me to get my dropshotting rod out when I get back to the UK. I live 5 minutes from the Grand Union which is premier zander water.

Got to be honest, I abandoned dropshotting a while ago. I lost quite a bit of tackle but also found it was a sure fire way to catch the smallest fish in the water. I envy you those zander, though,

I've never caught a Zander and I can't think of any north west waters that contain them. I know midlands cuts are full of them. Good eating, so I'm told.
