Bluemoon Angling Thread

Will do mate.
A friend of mine has had a cracking season on the Dee, mind you the lucky git can afford it!
I went up on the Annan for 3 days a bit back and never even saw a fish, and I was fishing really close to the tide.
We used to fish the Lochy every year till this. Another river with a dramatic decline :(
Salmon farms guilty on the West Coast. The wild stocks are getting eaten alive by the sealice generated by the fish farms.

I have seen it first hand mate. Disgusting.
There is a recent video taken in a salmon cage I saw, along with a petition I signed. I wouldn't have a clue how to post it!

Something has to change, if salmon were cute and fluffy people would be in uproar.

Yeah, I have lost count of the number I have signed. the scottish government have two investigations on the go but the findings will be whitewashed again as it is such a money spinner. The only thing that will stop it is consumers changing their eating habits away from farmed salmon. TBF, the One Show have done two or three articles now which has raised public awareness.

I saw the videos -they are all over Twitter. Bloody disgusting. As you say, if salmon had fur, hair or feathers there would be a public outcry. The thing is, the technology exists to farm in a much cleaner way with far less environmental impact - closed containment tanks on land. Maybe it will come before the Atlantic Salmon is extinct.

So I think the stretch is called Wye Lea. Its a mile or so upstream from Ross. I believe it is the first double figure fish caught on the stretch this season (according to the bailiff) which makes me very fortunate. To be honest, my feet haven't yet touched the ground I enjoyed the day so much. The last hour I had a couple of barbel, lost one and a chub and things were starting to heat up a bit. The guide reckoned we would have had more if we had stayed on but I had a fair drive. Anyway, I was over the moon with the four I caught and any more would have just been greedy ;-). I had forgotten just how hard a Barbel pulls. The strength of them was unbelievable. I really enjoyed the technical aspects of the fishing. Very different from the fly stuff I am used to.

I first fished for Barbel as a lad on the Yorkshire Swale, a couple of miles south of Richmond at a place called Easby Abbey. They were nowhere as large as the Wye fish averaging about 3lb and you were lucky if your chub stretched to 1lb! I suspect it will be a little while before I get the opportunity again.

The fish in the Ribble are a similar average size to the Wye. It’s not as beautiful or lightly fished, though.

Where on the Ribble could you recommend?
Tickled trout (downstream of M6 bridge, lefthand bank) used to be a day ticket stretch, may still be as it's years since i fished it. I think the best stretches are all club only nowadays. A mate of mine used to fish it regularly on PAAS ticket and reckons it fishes best when the river is in flood or fining off.

Yeah day ticket mate.

There are a few day ticket sections. As above, the Tickled Trout is decent, the next stretch down from Brockholes which I’m fishing tomorrow. There are free areas too, which contain some of the biggest fish. Let me k ow if you are planning a trip and I will be much more specific.

The guide I mentioned lives on the river and mentioned he had seen fewer salmon this season the any other. We expected to see some yesterday with the river at a perfect height for them to run but absolutely no sign. My friends in Scotland mainly fish the east coast rivers but they haven't had much of a sniff this season. Good luck on the Annan. Let us know how you get on.

My mate had a week on the upper Tyne a couple of weeks ago and had 4 salmon including an 18 pounder. Obviously been in the river a while with a huge kype. It actually looks like a Taimen on the photos.

At the other extreme I had an afternoon on the Ribble last week and caught some very large dace but no barbel. Plenty of bites all afternoon. A salmon fisherman told me that a few salmon were coming out.

Yesterday I fished the Llangollen canal. The fishing was brilliant with perch to 1lb (weighed), skimmers, good roach and chub to 1.5lbs. Unfortunately, the boats were a nightmare which really put a dampener on things. Literally, at no point in the 7 hours we fished was there no boat approaching.

Normally, I don't mind them but this was terrible. Easily the worst I've seen.

On the bright side, off to Portugal Sunday for some carp and barbel exploration.

Going to try and get into fishing next summer. Where is the best place to go and buy a starter set?

Good luck with the carp and Barbel. Let us know how you get on.

For my sins, since I have retired, I organise our angling club match (a well known bank) against our historic rivals (another bank). This match is in its 51st year and is still contested in Scotland and England in alternate years. This year we are on the Lake of Menteith with two days practice and then the match next Friday. We all stay in the same hotel and then there is a dinner and prize giving on the Friday evening so it is very much a social occasion as well as being a competitive event. Last year, the 50th anniversary match was held on Draycote Water and was the closest ever finish. Instead of killing the fish, they are measured and then safely returned. 24 anglers caught 135 fish and we won by 30cm (less than half a fish!). You can imagine the recounts that were required. This week is about finalising accommodation, menu, fishing tactics, flies, partnerships - very like Ryder Cup! We have three Scottish National winners and a total of 5 internationals fishing for us this year so we have a very good chance of doing ok. The other team have brought in a couple of ringers including a well known fishing journalist and an international so it will be no pushover. The scene is set. I will post a report on the result next weekend. One thing is for sure. None of the trout we catch will pull as hard as a Barbel. :-)
