Bluemoon Angling Thread

I can cast into the Bridgewater canal from my back garden but I hardly fish it. Hardly fish anywhere nowadays tbh. Been an angler 48 years from first going at 6 to Hollingsworth lake with my dad. After a few roach and perch tiddlers, that was it, hooked for life.

I've literally caught many thousands of fish of different species. Most in a day was 397 roach from marple lakes in the early 80s when it was prolific. Had a mini match with my mate and beat him by a single fish, good fun.
I bet it isn' t prolific now though with cormorants scoffing them all.

I'm sorting my gear out, I have far more than i realised. eBay I think.

I will say one thing, the relaxation and scenery outweighs the actual fishing(catching). It's taken me years to think that, but fishing is a fantastic way to de-stress and hear yourself think(if that makes sense). It is great mind therapy to be sat in nature's garden waiting for a bite.

Fishing to me isn't about fishing on a private syndicate water with carp tackle tart snobs hoping to catch a named fish previously caught 3oz lighter/heavier. It isn't about fishing man made donut shape ponds for ravenous F1 with a 16m pole hoping to fill 2 keepnets. Those places are way to monotonous and fuckin' easy.

If I gave some of the top guys a 13ft float stickfloat rod and said trot a float through this river they wouldn't have a clue. Too blinkered from fishing commercials. If those places were the only option, I'd snap my rods over my knee and piss on my tackle: /

Each to their own though. @Didsbury Dave. Do you know how long the waiting list is for prince Albert?

2 years. I joined in September.

Ah, a good old bit of angling cock waving. As you know, I'm more of a specimen hunter and my PBs are:

Carp 46-4
Barbel 11-1
Perch 2-8
Roach 2-12
Catfish 33
Tench 9-2
Chub 7-10
Dace 14oz
Pike c15lb
Bream c8lb
Grayling 1-12

Never had a zander.

Most of those were from the north of England where the fish are smaller.

And that's a really valid point. You can't catch them if they aren't there. Since getting a house in Warwick, I've noticed how easy the fishing is down there. Once I've retired I'll do some proper fishing in that area. I'm in Leamington Anglers but have hardly had a chance to get out when I'm down. Also going to take up fly fishing as I'm getting a bit fed up of carting so much gear around.

It's usually between 2-3 years but I don't know exactly at the moment. It's well worth it.

my best fish ever was a pike, caught on lymm dam, wasn't fishing for pike, caught a nice roach my mate was getting the burgers in off the van on the dam,i was pulling a roach in just about to net it and I saw a flash, the pike just miss my roach, when my mate got back I was all a dithering and waffling excitedly telling him about the pike, well low and behold my next roach again just about to net it and a pike had it,bit of a fight and I netted it , its still is the best fish ive ever caught and remember it like it was yesterday,3.5LBs :)
ive been fishing for about 7 years and that fish is my throphy fish :).
I caught a big perch again by accident haha , I had a small white boilie on,as I was retrieving it a perch must of mistaken it for a fishy, 2.5lb left me shaking haha, fishing is now my passion I wish I had found it 40 years ago.

just call me the accidental fisherman :)

It took me decades to catch a perch over 2lb, and I only got my first this spring, so well done!

I used to fish Lymm Dam 20+ years ago and it was common to get fish attacked in the way in - one the most exciting things to happen to a young angler. I was once returning a bream on there and a pike more or less took it from my hands. I shit a brick.

Good post. I wish I had a quid for everybody that said "fishing is shit, so boring" etc.

Well it can be boring and shit I suppose, especially if one has no idea on how to fish. And the angler showing them is pretty clueless.

Some really good advice on YouTube, and many anglers are happy to help a novice with advice on the bank.

As for in here, I am happy to help as the other anglers are.

I remember fishing Rudyard lake as a kid ledgering a single maggot. When retrieving a missed bite a 3.8 lb pike grabbed the maggot. Chaos! I'm frantically panicking whilst my dad was trying to tell me how to play it. Wow, my first pike. Fish like that you never forget. Not fished Rudyard for many years.

Very rare to catch a perch on a boilie btw.

Is Lymm dam day ticket? I fancy a bit of winter piking.

Thanks. I will apply to get on the waiting list.

Hmmm not sure about that. When I go out on a boat fly fishing I have the following:
Rods x 2
Large break your back box - like one you get in b & q some have wheels, mine doesn’t
1 heavy bastard boat seat
1 dry bag contains water, food, extra clothing
1 large landing net
1 electric minn Kota engine
1 humongous battery for said engine
1 box of reels containing 18 lines on spools
1 bag of clothing you put on in fishery car park waterproofs, wellies, waistcoat, various hats

I kid you not, I couldn’t believe how light we were when I was Barbel fishing the other week. A rod, a bag, a bait tin and a wee chair.

club owned(baymalton) but you can get a day ticket, the bailiff comes round to get your money

Talking of travelling light, I went out for a bit tonight to try to catch a big perch on a lure. I took a few bits from my rucksack and went down the canal. First cast I hooked a pike which fell off. Second cast a boat picked up my lure and snapped me off. I went in my pocket and had brought my rubber jigs but forgot the jig heads, so had to come home after less than 5 minutes.

Sometimes fishing can be really shit.

hahaha,a bad days fishing is still better than a good day at work, it does get you in a rage sometimes though hahaha

growing up in south manchester, the lack of decent waters was the big problem. The Maccy canal at hr Poyton was a two-bus trek, Lymm dam same, the Weaver at Hartford was a train and bike trip, Roman Lakes at Marple meant catching the 4-30 am train from london road , then a hike from the station, wellies flapping, maggot tins rattling then negotiating the worst lane in the north. Platt Fields was on the door-step, but fishing was banned eventually due to the number of ducks dying after being hooked. Eventually joined Moss Side Socials and got to visit rivers in the Midlands and canals in the Fens, some of the matches had over 500 pegs but I never really had the skill or drive to be successful. Angling had it's own sections in the national papers, with a page of match results on a Weds, Benny Ashurst and Ivan Marks were always in the money. A week-end on the Shannon, a bucket of worms and a 4lb bream every chuck did not inspire enough to do it again, so yes you can have too much of a good thing....like others have said though, being "on the bank" is the thing, fish are just a bonus, ( for some of us, anyway :)

I get fishing rage at other anglers who disturb my peace. I’ve had a few rows on the bank over the years. The most recent was only a few weeks ago on The Wye where, with a mile and half of empty river (both banks) to go at, the only other angler tried to plonk himself within 5 yards of me.
