Bluemoon Angling Thread

Well, that it. Exactly a year since I "retired" and despite lockdown and a ton of consultancy work I achieved my aim of doing more fishing. To be exact, I had 72 fishing days of more than 6hrs.

The coming year, I'm going for 100.
as long as i get out once a week im happy, my new lure fishing adventures should ensure i will get out twice a week, fingers crossed, ive missed out on 40 odd years of fishing and im not planning on missing anymore time

I won't say how many salmon fishing days on the Wye last season I counted up to fill in the Environment Agency catch record, with a zero return.
I am not right in the head!

Might be bad news coming tomorrow,I've just spoke with the fishery I do matches on,to book on for tomorrow,I asked what they thought might be happening going forward, and they think they will end up closing.

My lad text me at dinner to say Partridge Lakes in Warrington were closing as well....................great

My brother has kept a fishing diary since 1974. It's really weird reading a report from 40 years ago. You can remember it like it was yesterday.

If you've got the discipline, I 100% recommend that you keep a diary for the next 40 years so you can experience the days again and again. Wish I had.

That last sentence. Do you think that the fact that you aren't catching makes you more determined to keep at it ?

My mate who, as I've said, is a good all-rounder fishes a syndicate water where he hasn't had a carp for 2 seasons but keeps going back.

During our recent tour we fished the Teme and neither of us had a bite (apart from minnows) but that is rhe one place that absolutely draws both of us back.

Maybe we're all mad

I love being on the river. The wildlife, countryside and solitude. I enjoy the art of speycasting too.
Some of my longest lasting memories don't even involve catching fish.
Having a fox swim across the Wye in front of me, being a rod length from an otter or having a stag crash through woods down to the water to drink in the dead of night whilst sea trouting on the river Till.

The season before last on the Wye I didn't even see a salmon, let alone catch one.

Yep. I am crazy as a shithouse rat!

I was up early yesterday and on the river at first light fishing with a mate for pike on The Tees. We blanked here in July. It’s a one rod maximum so I went with a float legered dead smelt, my mate brought his lure gear. Conditions, unusually for us (we’ve had 5 consecutive full day blanks after several different species) were good, and it was a lovely soft, foggy, autumnal day for it.

We leapfrogged from peg to peg working upstream. An hour or so in and my mate had a Jack around 3lb on the lure. After a mile or so, fishing a 15 foot deep hole under a tree, and the float shot off to the depths. A short but spectacular fight with snags around resulted in a pike in the net with the obligatory walkers asking the obligatory questions. “Is it a salmon? Will you put it back?” Etc.

It was a lovely conditioned fish of 12lb. We fished all the way back to the car with no joy but overall this was a brilliant autumn day to be out, with great scenery, lots of laughs in the mud and a couple of fish to boot.

was up on the Mersey in Northenden , my very first river fishing, ticked all the boxes i wanted out of fishing, except no fish, i was getting lots of snags, wind knots and frustration, however i really enjoyed it, we were fishing for perch using lures, and drop shot.

ive learn about wind knots the most, how they occur and how to prevent them, so that was a great lesson, also where to put all my gear in my new sling back bag,

its brilliant when ive finished, all ive got to put away is one bag, :) that bag is ready to go at the drop of a hat, which is perfect for me( being lazy)20201110_130324.jpg

Unlucky mate. Never fancied The Mersey round there to be honest. Wind knots are a massive ballache with ultralight setups until you get used to preventing them and your line beds in. I'm glad you like the simplicity, though. Just keep it in your car and you can go any time!
