Bluemoon Angling Thread

Reminds me of a time my missus came fishing.....and seeing as I havnt been recently, I will share this true fishing story instead.

Twenty years ago or more when I was pleasure fishing regularly I came home from work one teatime and announced that I was going fishing. I know, said the missus, you can take me and our lad (who was about 8) with you, to show us how to fish.......... Fuuuuuuuuck, I thought but had no choice really, so went to put the tackle in the car. I found an old glass boat rod about 8 foot long which weighed about 20lbs itself and must have had a 4lb test curve.........ideal for a wife first time fishing the canal.

There is a stretch of the LLangollen canal not far from here and its only a few metres from the roadside too, it was a decent evening and not many boats either. I set her up with the boatrod and showed her what to do and she seemed happy enough casting in and that but I had to bait the hook for her with the mixed maggots we were using.

I was showing the lad what to do as I fished, and the wife seemed happy enough catching the odd gudgeon which I had to unhook etc for her now and again. I was concentrating on my float which was showing signs of another tiny fish nipping the bait when the missus says really calmly......."Ive hooked my eye". There was no panic in her voice, but an overriding sense of calm seriousness which belied her predicament. I looked round as she was a few yards away, and she was there as still as a statue, frozen in subdued fear. I went over to her and sure enough the hook had pierced her eyebrow just above the lashes and it was in danger of being ripped away with a wrong move.

I released the bail arm to slacken the line and put the rod down very carefully, I told her to keep still and hold her eyelid away from her eyeball. The two red maggots had been squeezed up the shank of the hook and she said that she could feel them wriggling against her eyeball. Fortunately I have only used barbless hooks for as long as I can remember so getting it out was surprisingly easy as I think adrenalin gave me a steady hand.

Afterwards, (through a sense of relief I suppose)we laughed about it, how calm she was,how the maggots must have wondered what was going on, and how she could feel them but not focus on them cos they were too close, and silly things like that.

There was no blood, but we still decided we had better go and get it cleaned up, and I started packing my tackle away while she insisted she had one last go. Suddenly she shouts "Ive got something big" and I turn round to see her with this glass rod bent double, give it to me I said but she wouldnt. After a few seconds I could see that it was "dead weight" and as she lifted the rod it cleared the water, a totally smooth and symetrical easter egg shaped thing covered in a stringy algae but its weight was collosal for its size. Unfortunately the little hook was only in the algae type stuff, and as she tried to swing it in I missed it and it swung out over the canal again and came off and hit the water with the biggest "splurdoosh" I ever heard.

I tried to net it off the bottom but failed and was for going in the canal to find it, but stupidly let her talk me out of it and we headed home. Thankfully there was no damage on her eyelid and we often laugh about it even now, but I have always regretted not finding out what the "object" was as it was almost certainly man made and not natural.......any (sensible) suggestions anyone?
I had to read that twice pal to make any sense.

Your Mrs hooks an eyeball with red maggots tickling her eyelashes and you release it. Shorty after she's swinging a WW2 bomb around with a boat rod on a Welsh canal? : /

Have you got any more of those magic mushrooms left mate, I'll have a handful? ; )

Lol, theres not many people that can say they hooked their eye and caught a possible bomb in the first hour of their first fishing trip.......oh, and had their eyeball tickled too. Must be cos of the way I taught her to fish!!

There was a Bob and Paul gone fishing Christmas Special on Sunday evening. It will be on catch up for those that missed it. They were on the Tees fishing for Trout, Grayling and Salmon. Spoiler (as usual they didn't catch that many). Still a lovely programme full of humour, warmth and pathos. And a bit of fishing....

Delighted to have found this thread. Joined the site a few years ago, but not used it much. Think I've only posted once.
Today I scrolled through the off-topic subjects and found this fishing thread. Made up.
I've spent 2 hours reading it from page 1 and found recommendations re waterproof clothing; venues; accommodation etc. And I'm only up to page 35.

Went fishing with Dad when in my teens. Gave it up for girls and, later, golf and family life. Started fishing again in 2014 when I was 63 and retired. Am absolutely useless at it - I just bung a method feeder out and wait for a wrap-round bite. I'm disabled - had MS since 1995, so stick to farmland pools where I can park near my peg. Have never fished a river, probably wouldn't be safe!

I just wanted to express my interest in the topic and will probably be up to date by Christmas.
Talking of which, hope you all have a good Christmas. Look after those you love.
Tony

Hi Tony, welcome to the thread, an oasis of calm in turbulent times. I look forward to hearing more about those "wrap-around bites" or, in my case, any bites at all.

Welcome mate. I am a fluff chucker but whatever discipline of the sport, we are all pals on this thread. Have a good christmas. Stay safe.

You don't need to break the bank for ultralight perch gear.

You want a 6-7 foot spinning rod, often described as an LRF (Light rock fishing) rod. It's strength is denoted by it's casting range in grams. Mine is 2-12g, and I use a 15-45g one for my pike fishing. These are fine:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Shakespe...956836&hash=item4214fae739:g:0fkAAOSwA9xecthg (the lighter/shorter two on here). Don't worry that they are marketed for the sea. They are fine.

For the reel, don't get a really crappy one, spend £40-50. Any spinning reel in 2000 size (the bigger the number, the bigger the reel). I have this one:

If you want to run anything past me put a post on here.
got one of those reels, not here yet, got it from bobco 39.99

Hi Tony. Welcome pal. As peaceful frog said it's sane here, unlike the Sane(Leroy) thead amongst many others mackerel flapper threads lol.

If there are any questions no matter daft they may seem then this Is the place to come to for help and advice. And that goes for anyone else interested in going fishing.

Tight lines folks.

I did a day pike fishing the River Tees yesterday. As we arrived at dawn the river started to rise and it rose a meter or. It’s as we fished all day. Not good for pike at all. My mate fished lures and had nothing. I fished deadbait. It was hard to present a bait at all with all the leaves coming down and the fast current, and the coloured water meant that scent was the beat chance of fluking a pike. I injected the sardine with lamprey oil but one of us (definitely my mate) lost the lid so we had no choice but to throw it away as we moved pegs the first time.

In the third peg something picked up my bait at last but put it down. An hour later, just as we were about to move, I had a proper run but nothing was there on the strike and the bait came back mangled. Next cast the same happened. My mate had a dropped run on his dead roach too.

By late afternoon the river was in full flood and it was really tough. We lost several sets of tackle and called it a day in time for the City match on the radio.

Several runs but no fish landed was the end result but it was a nice mild day to be out and we had a great sighting of a couple of roe deer on the opposite bank.

I did a couple of hours with the perch gear yesterday afternoon. I fished two canal stretches with three lures and had two "bumps" in one area but landed nothing.

Hard going at the moment. I was out Saturday too but the river (Avon) was in flood so I went on a local stillwater. Usual story at this time of year, very slow on the tip, the other two anglers packed up without a bite and no sooner had they gone than the fish started biting. Caught some decent roach and skimmers but , about 2.30, it started slowing again so I packed up and headed home for the football. Still, I got out, decent weather for the time of year and saw a few bites. Roll on the Spring

Happy Christmas everyone on here. Have the best day you can and you and yours stay safe. Tight lines for 2021 and lets hope we get on top of this virus in time to lift the travel restrictions for the new season.

And God Bless us every one.

Let us know if you get any decent fishy pressies. I know I've got a belting balaclava and some new fingerless gloves. I got my brother a new whopper-dropper as I broke his by getting too enthusiastic with it in Ireland in July.
