Bluemoon Angling Thread

I’ve seen hundreds of moose on the river over the years and only been charged twice, both times they had young ones with them. We’d seen a good sized Bull before this, it’s rack was still in velvet
How come you've only been charged twice - I'd have thought DNA evidence would have seen to it that you were at least cautioned a few times as well?

Amazing pictures. "a rack in velvet" means something different over here, and I have had a few of them in my time. :-)

I was really looking forward to this weekend on The Lower Severn and have all my tackle and bait sorted. Rooms booked Friday, Saturday and Sunday in the wonderful Ship Inn.

Which burnt to the fucking ground last night and now my trip's off.

Grabbed a window of opportunity for another trip up to The River Nidd last night as it had gone cooler and overcast. The river was still very low. I fished from 7 until 10.30pm and had 5 bites on a whittled down boilie. First two were big chunky chub, then I lost a barbel. As it got dark I landed two more small barbel, both around 2-3lb. What a healthy river this is with fish of all year classes.

Sad news mate, I and a couple of mates stayed there just a few weeks ago, was a very comfy stay and handy for several lengths of river. I've seen the vid and hopefully its only the outdoor and front of house thats affected and they are up and running soon.

I remember mate. I've stayed there before too. Great pub.

We've got a cottage right next to it booked for the last week in August too. For selfish reasons I really hope they are open by then but I doubt it. Workmen/labour are a nightmare to get hold of these days of course.

We tried to book for August but they were booked up. Sadly there's going to be a lot of disappointed anglers. We luckily got in just down the road at the Unicorn, Aug 16th for 3 nigts

Did an evening session on The Ribble last week and lost a good barbel and landed a good chub. A lure session on the local river on Sunday produced two small perch.

Last night I went back to The Nidd again. Things were going wrong from the off. I forgot my head torch. Hiked back to the car and it wasn’t there. The tip of my favourite small river rod was snapped. I got fishing anyway and landed another beauty of a chub. This river seems full of good ones and I need to try the centre pin and float rod for them. It started pissing down and I’d brought the leaky brolly. No more bites.

Then I left in almost complete darkness and had a problem. I’d clambered down a very steep bank which had turned into a mudslide. This caused me major problems. After slipping down a few times and nearly ending in the river, I had to throw my tackle half way up, climb halfway on hands and knees then do the same again. This eventually worked but as I got near the top my chair tumbled down and fell into the river. So I had to climb back down, rescue it with my net and do the whole thing again. Eventually made it, covered in mud and nettle stings and pissed wet through. This is why some anglers take ropes and dog spikes.

Nice chub though.

An afternoon light lure fishing yesterday. I fished dozens of spots, keeping moving downstream by car, and lost a lot of lures too. Finally found some fish in the last spot I fished, a big bridge which does often contain fish. First I landed a perch of around 1-12 which was chased in by another bigger looking one. Then I was bitten off by a pike (using flouro carbon leader). Next I hooked something sizable but the lure popped out after about two seconds. Then I had to go home.

Bloody hell mate, sounds like you had a right 'mare! I've never fished the Nidd but it reminds me of when i used to fish the Dane, tentatively crawling down a steep muddy bank to fish a deep hole. More trouble than what it was worth as I've ended up in the water myself minus several items of tackle.

Nice chub though, around 3lb?

We have ling and we have cod but we don’t have “ling cod”. Whatever it is it looks a beast.
I used to charter a boat over 20 years ago (from Bridlington or Whitby) and somebody would always catch a good size Ling. My best was a 10 pounder which i took home for the table. Wish i hadn't as it was not nice at all. Only fit for cat food.
