Overtook this thing of beauty the other day, wouldn’t that be fun to take a ride on

Off to the Rutland lodge again in the morning for 7 days of peace and relaxation (thank god I only have 11 months left at work, it's fooking relentless!).

For at least the first 3/4 days the carp won't be feeding due to the heat.

Going to take my whip and plenty of maggots and casters, and see how long it takes me to catch 100lb (it's stuffed with decent silvers).

Only wasps on the lures this weekend. Took Timur for an evening stalking carp and ended up with a swim fizzing like a jacuzzi with (presumably) bream because he didn’t get a run.

A moonlit session on The Ribble last night was much better. Hiked a long way through farmland to find some oxygenated water below a natural weir. There was a lame cormorant on the bank which ran away. Two rods, pellet on one and boilie on the other. Baited up with large PVA bags and settled back to enjoy the evening. A rustle on the far bank and a massive otter slipped into the river right next to the baited area. Half an hour later I had a run which resulted in a small barbel, maybe around 3-4lb. What sounded like a Tawny owl war broke out in the far bank woods which entertained me until the next screamer. Good scrap this time resulted in a nice, hollow barbel of 9-13. 95F812CA-22B5-4186-9855-07F894692802.jpegThis one needed a good nursing in the current to recover and the other rod, ten yards back on the bank. went as I was doing it. With a double take it is best not to panic. The fish often doesn’t bolt until you put pressure on it so finish what you are doing then get the rod. That’s what I did and it was a pesky chub.

The swim was full of fish but I was on the clock as you have to be off this stretch by 11pm and it was a good half hour walk to the car. 10.25 and another run and it was another shoal sized barbel which I unhooked in the net and released then dashed off under the light of a full moon.

Lovely little session. I’d have had a load of fish if I could have stayed.

Good report. I can't be doing with this heat so I haven't been out lately. Give me a January or February day any time.

Nice angling. Sounds brilliant.

Went again on The Ribble last night to a stretch with no curfew, arriving quite late and fishing a new, hidden area I've always avoided. Interestingly, a lure angler was just leaving and he's had big (3.5lb) perch from that area. I've never perch fished that stretch in my life. One for the future.

2 rods, full moon, bites started when it got dark. First one and nothing was there as I picked the rod up. This would almost certainly have been a chub as they don't get hooked well on long hairs, which is why I use them here .The first fish landed however was a chub, then I hooked and lost a big barbel on its first run. Upon retrieval the hair had wrapped around the hook, changing the hooking mechanism and I suspect that's why.

Heard and then saw a barn owl. I sat it out, hungry, and finally got my reward with a barbel around 7lb. Left at midnight under the light of the supermoon.

Potentially going fishing later this week, I’m an absolute novice and have been fishing only 2/3 times previously. Getting some fishing gear handed down by a friend and going with another who is also a novice. Can anyone give me some need to know basic tips for a beginner? Or point me in the right direction to find some. Have fished this same place previously just for small stuff like roach and perch, not bothered about what we catch just want to learn.

Breaking my arm badly in the spring put paid to most of this summers fishing/float trips. I've avoided this thread as it just pisses me off that I've not been able to fish. Finally got my cast off and some limited movement back in my arm. Threw a couple of lines out in the lake opposite our house today. It's encouraged as its full of fish. Caught 4 nice large mouth bass for supper. Just happy to be able to cast.

A bit late, but a brief report from my week in the rutland lodge with a private lake. Nature and peace are the two key words. First time I have ever witnessed 2 herons flying and "fishing" together, always thought they were quite solitary birds. Plenty of red kites, and had a kingfisher land on my rod and sit there for 5 minutes or so. Intrigued to watch a herring gull and her partner sit literally all day a few yards away and a water vole cleaning my fishing platform of every single dropped pellet as soon as it was dark. As for the fishing loads of carp as expected but the most enjoyable off the top on floating bread. However the absolute highlight was a broke a pb at my age... 3lb 4oz perch, 2oz better than my previous best, caught in the Bude canal in 1976!

Sorry, missed this. Hard to offer advice without knowing the water. I'd always use maggots and learn on the small stuff but take corn, try it every now and then and see if something better comes along.

Best to go along with what you have, watch what others are doing and maybe talk (briefly) to someone and see what's doing.

Let us know how you go.
