Funny that. The same holds true for fly fishing for Rainbow. Although Scotland has Menteith thats really about it although Harelaw is making a good fist in the last year or so. The north of England? V little. However if you live in the Midlands, the world is your oyster, Rutland Water, Grafham, Pitsford, Ravensthorpe, Draycote, Eyebrook..........all within an hour of each other. All brilliant fisheries.
Your right, last year we bought BAA cards and fished the Severn in Wales and right though to Bewdley regularly. But it is a pain when after having a good day you're faced with a over 2 hour drive home. While I'm on, can I pick your brains ? We are having 3 days on the Avon around Barton early season, staying in Alcester. Not after any detail just a quick what's in store for us.

Good decision. I lived for years in Berkshire, right by the Thames, and I've never got over the loss of good fishing. I still remember my first walk up the Thames, and how unbelievaably rich and exotic looking it was. The biggest reason I moved to Didsbury in 1996 was City, and we got relegated before I'd even moved house. I moved to Yorkshire in 2005 and it was miles worse than Cheshire, which is why I'm still a PA member. It's absolutely shit around here in every single way. North Yorkshire is better with some lovely rivers but the fish are not big. You have to move your own goalposts.
The Swale round Richmond used to be brilliant when I was young. Barbel, Dace, Chub, Brownies and Grayling. The Barbel only 3 or 4lb though. Absolutely stuffed with shoals of fish.
All the North Yorkshire rivers are pretty and have good heads of fish but there are no specimen fish waters. That's my problem. I've fished so much and for so long I'm a bit too size-obsessed for my own good. I'm like a junky chasing the first fix: I crave the unlerlying excitement that there is the possibility of a really big fish.
Yeah. I completely get it. It’s why people are still drawn to Loch Leven. You might not catch much but there is always the chance of a once in a lifetime fish. A truly wild 7lb brownie. There will be double figure fish in there still.

Looking at the weigh sheets from the match it was a feast of famine job .Very little caught and blanks in some areas a few fish in others then several huge weights from a few pegs where the fish are tightly shoaled and prepared to feed .River was coloured which helps this time of year aswell especially with bream . July is usually a good month on the weaver but August September and October usually the best . River with colour after rain and a bit of flow always best .
I fished it under the arches at Vale Royal last Sunday. In 4 hours over late am early pm I had 3 tiny roach. Tip never moved for any of them. Reason I'm telling you is that's good for me. :-)
Haha . My mate had the 40 kilo weight of bream on Saturday from peg 42 on the boats , the 20 kilo weight came from the end peg on the dredger next to the main road bridge ;-)
So near yet f'in miles away.
