Is that fair on the fish ? As I often tell myself just before I blank, "they've got no chance !"

Had a couple of hours double handed switch and light fly rod fishing near Hay on Wye Saturday. Missed a few grayling/trout takes as I am soo bloody slow striking (too much lazy salmon fishing!)
Had a couple of big chub before the inevitable barrage of canoeists came...
I directed the first dozen of so to pass behind me, but then the whole river was taken up by them and I headed for the bank before I got taken out!

I got the idea there wasn't a salmon within 5 miles of me.

Beautiful spot though.

The river round Hay is really very beautiful.
What state was it in?

Some big buggers in those flies. I guess they match the size of crickets you find. Let us know how you get on.

Quite low and reasonably clear mate (considering!) I was just down from The Boat Inn downstream of Hay. Lovely stretch.
You can get free days on the 'More Rods On Rivers' for fly fishing if you are a member of the Wye Salmon Association... £10 a year!

Wonderful day today. Went to the polluted river Avon, just because I like the scenery. I had the best day I've ever had on there, 6 bream over 4lbs, a chub of 3.5lbs and lost another chub of similar size in the lillies. Really cheered me up to see what has survived when I thought it was barren. Best bit is, so does everyone else, so no one is fishing it. I'm not going to tell them !!

I got a new Welsh one mate... after being dumped by the posh one.

I actually caught 2 salmon earlier in the season and got my mate one whilst ghillieing for him...

I am the fisher king once more!

Now get off this anglers only thtead, you old dribbler! :)

Ps. I am currently having a cuppa with Snork senior and he says Hi.

Long day today! Nine and a half hours on the river and it was mid 30’s this afternoon (C)
Caught a bunch of trout, Rainbows, one Brown, Cutthroats and some little Brooke Trout. Towards the end of the float we were catching on some of those big dry flies, always a treat!

Amazing day on the river, caught a lot of trout. A mayfly hatch had them eating like crazy. The river was really low and the boat spooked them from a long way off, ended up throwing small flies (16-18 weight) way far ahead of the boat, literally hitting line backing.

Off for a few days chucking fluff on a few beats of the Welsh Dee tomorrow.

You may have seen this already but when you can't get out on the water, this is the next best thing. Quite the best filming of fly fishing I have seen in a good while with two very likeable hosts. Have posted just the one video but if you subscribe there are a series.

Never done any coarse fishing apart from a bit of pole fishing with my Dad when I was a youngster, I do a fair bit of sea fishing but always kept it simple, my little lad has this week been pestering for me to take him to do a bit on a lake after seeing some youtube videos so I've promised to get the basics and take him before he starts back at school.

What do I need as far as a rod and reel? I'm thinking keep it traditional and just go for a float setup, I've been through all my sea fishing gear and somewhere over time I've picked up a random John Wilson avon rod (with quiver tips) is this any good for what I want paired with a cheap reel? I'm still going to get the lad a cheap rod and reel either way.

Thanks for any help, it will be much appreciated.
