Interesting article. As you said, we have always hated Utd. and it dates back to the '58 Cup Final. Not just because we were expected to roll over again like we did in the 'Matthews Final' in '53 but because Duncan Edwards was poised to sign for us and join his cousin Dennis Stevens in the Bolton team until Matt Busby nicked him from under our noses. Imagine a team with both Lofthouse AND Duncan Edwards! Lest we forget: http://www.britishpathe.com/record.php?id=35187

The Bolton v United rivalry is geographical, isn't it? The western side of Manchester, and going beyond the city boundary, Salford and Trafford Park have always been United strongholds. As you head north of Salford, you move towards Bolton, and there are districts that are inbetween the two, like Swinton, Clifton and Pendlebury.

(My old man - a big blue - lived in Clifton for a while when he was growing up, but had lived all his early years in Moss Side, hence the City allegiance. I don't know the area, though, so someone who does please correct me if I'm talking sh!te).

Anyway, as I've always understood it, the rivalry between Bolton and United grew up because there were areas between Salford and Bolton where both teams had a lot of fans. Bolton had less of a rivalry with us because our core support base tended to be in east Manchester, further re oved from Bolton.

I live in the pendlebury area now, originally from Blackley. And all the Rags from there not one of them goes whereas the Bolton fans from the area are all season tickets holders, and yes they do hate them with a passion more so than alot of blues fair play to them i say.Normally the only back up i have when the gobshite non attendee rags are spouting there shite ;)

Interesting stuff. I knew a lot of the hatred went back to the 1958 final, but I was unaware that you almost signed Edwards.

The story of the Bolton bus coming under attack from United fans during the victory parade still amazes me. As far as I'm aware, back in the 1950's violence surrounding football matches was pretty much non-existant.

Could do with borrowing that for the Derby. In fact, Bolton fans could make their money back by hiring it to fans of other clubs. The rags might get the idea then if they saw it every week, regardless of the opposition!
