I think it's age related.
I pretty much gave up booze, not purely for anxiety but I found I was waking up at 3 or 4 am and not being able to sleep any longer as I started lying there in a dark room worrying about my health, families health, money, so I'd get up and then feel like crap all the next day through lack of sleep. This started happening when I reached late 50's. Before that I could drink and sleep like a log.
I still have the odd whiskey, wine or beer now and then but not more than one or two. Just give it up like I did is the answer.
