Each number is unique i would assume, check the number against the database and bingo you have your copyright infringer by the bollocks.

that is why a certain "streaming" website has a little box down there saying HD STREAMS - to block out the numbers I presume.

Not sure if it's the same thing but I've seen a number above the Sky Sports logo at the top right of the screen when watching on Sky a few times.
