Short video on how Boudicca's rebellion against Roman rule
Yes,all that is remarkable. She led the Iceni, who joined with other tribes in the rebellion, and burned London to the ground, the subsequent march south by the Northern Legion of around 10,000, and the following battle was brilliant military tactics by the Romans.
At their zenith the Roman army was invincible, to think the British casualties were around 100,000 in this conflict is remarkable.
To be honest, it's unlikely that she was actually called Boudica. That was probably a name the Romans gave her or a romanised version of her name. Even her tribe's name 'Iceni' was created by the Romans and it's probable that they called themselves something different. How is her name pronounced now? When I was a kid it was Beau-de-c-a now I hear Bu-di-ca.. Confused!!
Apparently Celts were very superstitious. They believed you could be cursed by magic, but the curse only worked if you used the full name. So they often went by nicknames or shortened names to prevent curses. Boudicca has a name similar to the goddess Boudiga, so it is possible she went by that name to disguise her true (secret) name.To be honest, it's unlikely that she was actually called Boudica. We don' have pics, but she was apparently red haired and taller than the average man of her day.you know the rules, pictures of said wench required.
