Bournemouth (A) | PL | Post Match Thread

Is safe to come back on here yet?
I'd wait until after the International break if I were you ;).
Actually maybe Christmas might be a better option.
Let's be honest though after the past week people are asking some legitimate questions - specifically why the fook we played the team we did against Spuds if so many were carrying knocks/needed a rest.

The problem for me was for many, that result was half expected. Any mates I spoke to prior were not convinced of a victory, watching Cheesys blog it was a similar theme pre match. That kind of result had been coming. We stumbled over the line against Fulham Brentford, Southampton, Wolves and fluffed our lines against Newcastle. We haven't been convincing for a while. Of course losing Rodri and KDB will impact a side, I find it crazy just how lost and labored we look though. We have the best manager and still with injuries a better starting 11 than most, so what is the issue? It isn't being entitled either, it is expectations, we aren't small time anymore and being shit decades ago doesn't excuse current day poor performances. You can be unlucky and drop points in games you don't deserve to but I would argue our points tally is greater than our on pitch performances have deserved so far.

It is a long season and Pep needs to earn his big bucks and find solutions to these problems, rinse and repeat all season has led us to this point

My concern is that squeaking a few results has inflated our current position and papered over cracks that are becoming fissures.

One thing I would note is that our transfer business has not been up to snuff for the last few years. The likes of Phillips, Nunes, Kovacic and Doku have been expensive and peripheral, at best, to date. When we talk about players that would improve us, it’s the likes of Wirtz, Musiala…players that have a built-in starting position in the team…yet we have bought expensive squad players. In fact, Savinho is the only big signing we have made recently that has created any serious excitement and looks like they are a big time player, even though Doku and Nunes have shown flashes and Kova has been a steady Eddie in midfield and thank fuck we’ve had him!

Another thing is that Pep’s attacking philosophy requires almost perfection to achieve the results that we all crave. As we have seen, we are brilliant at bringing the ball, and the entire team, into the last third, but from there we faff about for minutes on end. Shuffle left, shuffle right, nope, back to the left, nope, back to the right….

Now, I understand there are often 18 players in there, but if we can’t generate a chance, a shot or a cross out of all the faffing about, then what’s the point?

I might get pilloried for even pointing it out, but Fergie’s United were masters of this for a decade. They pushed it wide and put it across, retrieve the out ball and recycled it. It was constant pressure, constant chances, all just waiting for a mistake, a loose ball, a deflection…and a goal.

We are a “play to feet” team. I get it. We are technically quite brilliant, and can often move teams around to create space. Brilliant! But where there is NO SPACE? What then?

Pep loves to talk about the 11 behind the ball, Erling has three on him and two in front. OK, that’s 5, so where are OUR open men?! Well, they’re the 5 shuttling ball from left to right!

Instead, we should be dropping a player like Foden OUT of the box and pushing a player like Dias, Stones, Akanji INTO the box. Not only does that give us more height in the box, but it replaces a non-shooting defender with a midfielder with an excellent outside shot AND a killer pass in him, if he sees it!

We also have 4 wingers who need to understand that not every cross has to go 8 ft in the air. A good attacking cross at 4-6 feet in a nightmare for defenders, because it’s neither here nor there, it is mid-body and arm height, and there’s almost nothing they can do to defend it with their feet OR head. So, drive a few balls in. See if there’s a deflection, feed off the chaos, and if it does drop it has as much chance of dropping for us as them.

Leave a Rico deep and play 9 vs 11, because they’re playing a zonal shell at that point and our movement and willingness to put the ball in the mix is their worst nightmare. When they hoof it clear, have Rico sweep it up and recycle it!

In short, we MUST do something different because we are struggling to beat teams who come to play 11 defenders and break on us AND the teams who aggressively pressure us and don’t give us the time to build up to the last third. What’s left???

Matey, it was one bad result

I would never question Pep and I believe in what he always says, One Game at a time
Also, he works with the players every day he knows how fit and ready they are and hates to gamble on a player.
Walker has not trained for 19 days but he had to play him because of the games coming up, Balancing the squad is hard when your injury hit and some players are carrying knocks,

We have 2 more games before the international break and Pep has to get to that point the best way he can.
maybe he's thinking the Champions League is the major game we need to win right now and protect players

One Loss that all it was

Hopefully everyone now has a more balanced view of this game ?
Bournemouth are no mugs, especially at home. So not an unexpected result, considering City's performances this season.
My fear is that Pep is seldom prepared to make early substitutions when things are not going well.
Bournemouth, like several other of the "smaller clubs" (e.g. Brighton & Brentford), have a superb work ethic. Add to this several very rapid players, they give no team the time and space to gracefully stroke the ball about.
This quick pressing and passing style of "risk" football is getting more popular and successful.
If City are struggling against this style of football, which is draining, then all 5 subs need to be used.
Once again, Pep sticks by his starting eleven for far too long.
Against Bournemouth, only 1 sub used before 85 minutes doesn't make sense when the opposition use their subs.
Yes, City always end the season well. However, this season with more injuries, our current established stars, need rotating to not burn them out.
Thankfully, Nunes is breaking through, but McAtee, O'Reilly and Wright need more game time in order to get prepared to start a match...

thing is internatioal break come and everyone flies off round world injured tired whatever so still no rest

Pep and City have to stop as many going. Players who are carrying knocks or players who have just come back from injuries must be given a break. I would like all the internationals at city to have a break but that is not going to happen

I couldn't watch the match on Saturday and I hate listening to radio commentaries, don't like MotD highlights unless I've seen the match but have now seen the whole match replay. We have to give Bournemouth credit for the way they played because it was very difficult for us to deal with. The basic problem was that the back four were simply not fit, and particularly in Kyle's case a long way from being match fit. That's certainly not a complaint or criticism but a statement of fact: they should not have played and would not have played had they and Pep had any other option. Bournemouth were savvy enough to start at a high pace and tempo and this brough an early reward, though but for excellent work from Eddie they could have been ahead well before they did take the lead. We did well in terms of possession but we lacked the usual movement an zip and never really looked like playing through them. Kovacic looked more uncertain than usual, Phil was struggling and may not be back to full match fitness and Bernado was strangely ineffective as a result. Nunes tried hard but Erling never got the service to have too great an impact though he nearly snatched an equaliser - but too often the front two were isolated, at least until Doku came on. Pity he could only manage ten minutes.

So Bournemouth were worthy winners. The only solution is to get all our wounded fully fit ASAP.
