Travel Lodge Sportcity is fine. But as Blingy says it is a bit of a hike. People told me it was close and we stayed there for the Real game. But it's a good 35 minute brisk walk - and I mean brisk. People after said I must be kidding but I bet they hadn't walked it.

It's quite quiet, the bar was open anytime you want pre and after match and it's safe, even in Gorton!

But as I say be prepared for a long, leisurely stroll (Mary Ds and the Manchester are on the way if you fancy a crush) or take a cab - shouldn't be too much it's straight up the main road, people on reception will call it I imagine

thanks for the info m8. ive read a few reviews which said it was 15-20 min walk and looking on google earth, it only looks down the road!

I have walked it many times - I much prefer the tram & Ashton Travelodge. It really is a hike, no less than 30 mins !

Like others have said, try the travel lodge in ashton under lyne,I pass it going to the game by tram or bus,the tram stop is about 100 metres from the lodge and the Sheldon arms pub ,think you'd get a room for about £150 friday to sunday (3 nights ),tram on a match day from there would take about 15-20 minutes max.

Stay in town. Everything on your doorstep, nothing at Travelodge Sport City. Not sure how they have the cheek to call it that but the walk isn't that bad! The one on the Printworks sounds good for £70.

The Manchester are on the way

The Manchester (crossroads) has shut for good the car park people next door have bought it so may be demolished, and the vic (eastlands) is being turned into a shop last I heard, so no chance of reopening.

As for a place to stay if you want to be near town and able to walk to the ground theres always the lower turks head which has rooms and if you want a travelodge theres one in ancoats

i think i may join you there sir! never had a bad experience with a premier inn.

The Premier Inn in Dale Street beside Picidilly station is great. You can tram it from the ground from the station and it's minutes walk from the city centre. We fly over from Belfast and always use it, never had a bad stay.

thanks for the replies everyone. A great help.

Last question, i remember reading quite a few posts on here saying how busy and slow the trams are on match day, how early do you think we should leave to get the stadium if we are staying in the piccadilly or northern quarter area? If the weather is good we will walk but just in case its hammering down? thanks.

Me n mates normally drink in town pre match and jump a tram between qtr past and half past 2 for a 3pm kick off and get there in plenty of time. If in the northern qtr get on at shuedhill or market st ncan be less crowded

Excellent! thanks mate!

I'm looking at getting over for that game, but I have to wait and see how we get in in our CL qualifier. If we fuck up, and end up in the EL, we'll be playing on the thursday before the Bournemouth game, which would end up getting punted to the sunday. I can only do saturday games (and friday nights this season). So I can't do anything re. travel and accommodation yet. I can get the match ticket okay, as I can apparently (according to supporter services) get a refund if I get in touch 7 days before the game. Not much point me booking the match ticket yet though, until I know for sure that I can get to the game. And the longer I wait, the dearer the flights will be. At the moment, Knock to Liverpool (out friday afernoon, back sunday afternoon) is €70.

All the travelodge and ibis are great if you get a decent price.Prefer the Ibis budget myself if you can get it for a decent price.
Booked up for Altrincham and Bolton Travelodge for our first couple of games.

any recommendations of where me and the missus could have a pre-match pint? Is Mary d's woman friendly?
