Bradford City (A) 13.05.89

that was good, and some very early attempts at behind the scenes footage and 'immersive' highlights, felt very modern. Also, some very funky camera work/angles on 2:29 trying to follow Hinchcliffe down the line (unsure why!).

Remember listening to Brian Clarke’s commentary on Piccadilly. Feeling more and more sick with every minute that passed until…..elation!!
Brian Clark never sounded upbeat or optimistic when covering City games ?
Perhaps, that's why I'm still pessimistic when I listen on the radio...

One of the great days of my youth

My main memory is of bananas everywhere as we walked to the ground. We were in the terrace behind the goal which seemed mentally overcrowded. And man when that goal went in - hysteria, utter bedlam all around , probably still in my top 3 all time goal celebrations

Tickets were like gold dust. Bradford would only sell them to people with proof of a Bradford post code. I was at Huddersfield Polytechnic at the time and had a student union card. I went over on the bus on the Monday before the game and rocked up at the ticket office to chance my arm. I put on a Yorkshire accent and said I was a Bradfor dfan from Huddersfield. The girl ummed and aahed and my heart raced and in the end she reletned and said "Go on then". So i went "I'll have 5 tickets please". She laughed her head off and said "I'll give you one in the Kop and your lucky to get that". I took it and was gone.

There were two big groups on City in their Kop, one at the top, one at the bottom. The one at the top were fighting on and off throughout the game but at the bottom it was fine.

All Ir emember is the unbeleivable tension and "The Bradford Gypsy" running ont he pitch to tell the players they needed to score, to a chorus of "Where's your caravan?" from the Bradford fans. Then the goal, mayhem in the kop. At the final whistle someone opened a gate and as we all ran on the pitch a small crush developed and a few fans fell. I can remember the fear in this lads eye as a pile up developed on top of him and a few of us helped them out. It was just after Hilsbrough, remember.

Brilliant day, tension and glory, a forerunner of games to come. "City are back, hello"
Tickets were like gold dust but the Leicester and rugby branch didn't mess about.. Pete and Anita Brritton, with Dave Kelly, had arranged a pre match supporters club square off.. and my day began, being picked up on the m1 Nottm, about 9am ,picked up by the mini bus to take us ooop north...We played Bradford supporters club on some boggy Footbal. Pitch on the outskirts of Bradford ,beat them, 12 - 1 ,I scored.
I was buzzing ,but nervy as Fuck for the game.
Bradford supporters did us proud, got us into their supporters club ,got a few beers sunk after our game which calmed the nerves. I'd already been presented with a trophy for the branch supporter of the year,I went nearly every game that season ,I was mad for it..A total Manchester City robot,if you like, home or away ..I was there.
We had seats in their Main stand.dotted around but mainly down by the front, near to the " away " fans to our Right.
City were in full voice behind the goal.
I can remember
Little pockets of violence breaking out ,on the terrace away to my left
There was an Electric atmosphere all day long....but for me.it started earlier,as we put Bradford supporters football club to the sword,...ahead of the main event. ...God bless Trevor Morley.
.

Yeah thinking back he did sound alright with us in the late 80s on Granada Soccer Night.
Then sky injected him with the colour red.
That's exactly what I'm talking about.
He was a brilliant commentator.....people on here don't want to hear this ,as they have been poisoned by his out put in the later years.which was ...chronic, and so Anti Manchester City you wouldn't believe...

It needs to be said.
Martin Tyler started out as a brilliant, balanced, acknowledgeable football commentator, he was a natural at it,brought the game to life,
Very very skilled at his job.im old enough to remember those days..

But then something did change. His contract.
Rather like when brilliant local music band ......sign a big contract ,and change. The name remains the same, but not sure about the soul.

Here’s the shirt Trevor Morley wore that day.

Did you acquire that since or get it directly off Morley on the day?

Only, I blagged a lift home off some lads from I think Moston. Somewhere in North Manchester anyway. And one of them was in possession of it.

It was like a Salford Van hire or similar. Everyone just piled in the back, with no seats or shit.

Anyway, thanks for the lift if it was you.
