Brentford fan here. Good to see quite a few City fans up for the trip. Makes sense with the Charity Shield Final the day after. Its the first day of our football season and for the first time in over a decade, Bees fans are actually really excited with a season to really look forward to. Uwe has seemingly bought some long missing passion and belief back to our club as well as a few decent players too.
We won our first friendly 10-0 today. OK you may laugh because it was 'only' Tonbridge but they are three leagues below us (its like you guys playing Gillingham) and they were playing afc Wimbledon not to long ago. We struggled to draw 0-0 against them last season so something has happened 12 months. Again I know it's only pre-season but Stoke struggled to a draw with Newport county this weekend (similar standard).
Anyway, the good news is there are lots of boozers in the Brentford vicinity. The traditional pub on each of the corner of the ground. The best one to visit probably being the Griffin
Griffin - <a class="postlink" href="http://www.beerintheevening.com/pubs/s/23/2357/Griffin/Brentford" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.beerintheevening.com/pubs/s/ ... /Brentford</a>
A few other decent pubs a little further afield too but still 5 mins walk from the ground. The Lord Nelson (Enfield Road) is a great back street boozer and The Globe (Windmill Road) is a great pub too. Both have gardens and you can easily park outside then walk to the ground from there. And if you want to head into Brentford 'centre' there's The Brewery Tap and the Magpie and Crown amongst others. And (if you like that kind of thing), The Globe is the head and shoulders pick of the bunch when it comes to quality of barstaff
Lord Nelson - <a class="postlink" href="http://www.beerintheevening.com/pubs/s/68/6878/Lord_Nelson/Brentford" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.beerintheevening.com/pubs/s/ ... /Brentford</a>
Globe - <a class="postlink" href="http://www.beerintheevening.com/pubs/s/59/5927/Globe/Brentford" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.beerintheevening.com/pubs/s/ ... /Brentford</a>
Brewery Tap - <a class="postlink" href="http://www.beerintheevening.com/pubs/s/23/2343/Brewery_Tap/Brentford" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.beerintheevening.com/pubs/s/ ... /Brentford</a>
Magpie and Crown - <a class="postlink" href="http://www.beerintheevening.com/pubs/s/23/2341/Magpie_and_Crown/Brentford" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.beerintheevening.com/pubs/s/ ... /Brentford</a>
No need for a neutral area or for Man City fans hiding colours in Brentford. You can wear your colours in any pub in Brentford - and Man City fans will be welcome. One of our best nights last season was before and after the Everton game. A warm September evening and both fans were having a good crack inside and outside all the boozers (till 2am on a Tuesday night) and buying each other drinks - even after we had knocked them out of the Carling Cup on penalties.
Best part of the ground to stand is either the paddock (the Braemar Road lower seats but there's a lot of standing in there) OR the Ealing Road terrace behind the goal. It is £20 to get in and it's pay on the day. No need for advance tickets.
And for folk coming down for the weekend, there are a few decent hotel deals flying around if you're QUICK. I checked prices for Fri 5th and Sat 6th August.
TRAVELODGE
Travelodge Park Royal (<a class="postlink" href="http://www.travelodge.co.uk/hotels/info?hotelId=50" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.travelodge.co.uk/hotels/info?hotelId=50</a>) is £50 for Friday night and £65 for Saturday night. Its fairly new and its half way between Brentford and Wembley. Right near Park Royal station. Its pretty easy to get to Wembley from there ( and its 20 mins by tube to Brentford (Northfields station then walk or E2 bus which actually stops outside The Globe and Lord Nelson)
There's a Travelodge in Ealing ( a new one) <a class="postlink" href="http://www.travelodge.co.uk/hotels/info?hotelId=500" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.travelodge.co.uk/hotels/info?hotelId=500</a> which is £43 for Friday and £75 for Saturday. Ealing is livlier than Park Royal for a night out and its closer to Brentford, easy to get to Wembley and on the tube into Central London (tube station is 10 mins walk).
The travelodge at Heathrow is dead cheap at £75 for BOTH NIGHTS. They charge £4.50 for a shuttle to the tube though (each way) which is a bit of a cheek. But at £75, even if you took a late night cab back from Central London for say £40, you would still save money.
And for a few quid more, the travelodge in Waterloo is £155 for both nights which isnt bad for Central London. You can get to Brentford on the mainline from Waterloo and Wembley by tube.
Do travelodges do twin rooms? Not sure. They may all be doubles.
EASYHOTEL
Check Stelios' easyhotels but dont stay at the 'heathrow' one because it's not that near heathrow and transport isnt great from there. Paddington is very good if you can get it reasonable enough (no windows).
Don't choose a central london hotel if you need parking though. Not worth it. EXPENSIVE!!!!!
HOSTEL
Then theres a hostel in Northfields. Its basic but cheap (like £20 a night) and right across from the tube station. Its 15 mins walk from Brentford and jump on the tube to Wembley (easy from there).
Northfields hostel - <a class="postlink" href="http://www.youth-hostels.co.uk/youth-hostel/Northfields-Hostel/34115?gclid=CIbp6c39hqoCFQJO4QodlkdG0Q" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.youth-hostels.co.uk/youth-ho ... 4QodlkdG0Q</a>
Look on booking.com for decent prices sometimes.
The IBIS in Wembley right by the stadium has twins for £111 for both nights (good price although Wembley is cr*p for going out). Its a very popular post-match England game drinking bar though. You can always cab it back from town. Its quick to get into town from Wembley on the tube
Jurys Heathrow (well hatton cross) is £133 both nights for a twin and 4 mins walk from the tube.
Other names -
Boston Manor hotel, Ealing (close to tube - £60/nite twin. Bus/Cab into Ealing for nitelife or tube into London). Not much happening in the vicinity of the hotel but ealing is fairly near, the tube is close and Brentford is 15/20 mins walk
Premier West Hotel, Hammersmith. £60 twin. Great location near tube, busy centre, 10 mins tube to Northfields for Brentford or 20 mins on the bus and easy trip to Wembley too. Loads of places to go out here and around here - chiswick, hammersmith, richmond, shepherds bush, notting hill, earls court, putney, central london EASILY got to from here. Good pubs on the river too in Hammersmith. The hotel may be an OK B&B but you'll more than make up for it with location here. At £60 a twin, I highly recommend this one.
All of these I mention are easy access to the tube so you can get to Brentford and Wembley easily. Last tube is around midnight from town by the way then after that its the night bus which runs all night (and is a bit of a laugh) and you can get pretty much anywhere on the night bus.
I think that will sort you for now and as you can see prices aren't as bad in London town if you have a search around.
Personally, I would either stay in Hammersmith first then Central London (if you can afford it) then probably Ealing (as opposed to Wembley or Park Royal). Northfields is a better location than Ealing as its right across from the tube and close to Brentford so if you are happy with a hostel, I would stick that top of the pile as its 10 mins on the train to Hammersmith anyway and you save £40 a night - that's your beer money. And in Brentford I would either drink in The Griffin (by Ground) or The Globe or Lord Nelson (5 mins walk)
Hopefully see you at Griffin Park on the Sat 6th August.
